Those of you planning to get the RB250GS ...
One quick question ... i don't see an option for this router/switch to dail a PPPoE connection ... how are you guys planning to dail it?

Please share your setup methods ... thanks.

My current setup (VIP20)
BTU -> Switch -> dir-615 not from TM on DD-WRT for internet & dir-615™ for IPTV

recently , my internet has been really really slow and my packet loss is like crazy...when i ping to any site , i have loads of request time out..i called and complain to tm , after troubleshooting ( pinging to my own router etc etc ) , the service technician say that 'because ur speedtest show that ur still downloading at 5mbps , then its ok!' then i ask him about my request time out and he answered 'sir , that one is ur computer la sir' ... and when i told him that i use another com and tried it out as well he answered 'that computer also la sir' ... WTF?!

Unifi CSO are idiots who doesn't know anything about network troubleshooting. All they do is follow a manual to guide them on troubleshooting with the user.
Step 1 - Ask user if power plug is on
Step 2 - Ask user to off n on the power
Step 3 - Ask user to ask the CSO back if he has a brain.

Idiots ... They only know how to say .. speed test ok ... then everything else is user problem not TM problem ...

installed unifi vip 20 on thurs. left everything on...FRI morning DIR 615 DIED!!!! It's really a crap router. So here is my plan

BTU--->RB250GS--->Router---->Cisco AP 1252g--->PC

RB250GS configured as per http://unifi.athena.my/index.php?option=co...id=55&Itemid=67

I only need data to work. Not interested in IPTV.

Any PPPOE router to recommend?

Can the above configuration work for my case?

Any idea where to get the RB250GS from Malaysia?

DIR 615 really sucks big time.

thanks guys
*
RB250GS is just a managed switch? Can't dail a PPPoE connection?

From what i read, DIR-615 is a good piece of hardware, but the original firmware is crap however i doubt the one TM provided is good (mine died in 7 days) got that replaced by TM then ... I went out and bought another DIR-615 (RM130) flashed it with DD-WRT and its has no problems since ... absolute solid thing now ...

Funny thing ...
When I do an upload test with TMs router it max out at 200kb/s
When i do an upload test with DIR-615 (DD-WRT) it max out at 2.5mb/s

I'm trying to order my RB250GS but i don want it if it cant dail a PPPoE, if its only going to do VLAN tagging then DD-WRT can do that, don really need another hardware just for that.

Any comments?

I've done Unifi PPPoE on DIR-615 and DIR-825 with DD-WRT both works fine ... smile.gif

Just so fed-up with the corrupted downloads now ...

The RVS4000 supports VLAN management and PPPoE but it doesn't support PPPoE over VLAN AFAIK. It can only be used as a switch for Unifi, much like the RB250GS or the Procurve.
*
If it's only going to used as a bridge, why now just use a normal 5port switch, with 2 routers?
1 router just for IPTV (provided my TM)
1 router, you can pick ur own fav model which supports DD-WRT. DD-WRT supports PPPoE and VLAN Tagging.

Currently i'm doing this, since the 3 mentioned models above can't dail a PPPoE then what's the benefit of it?

I've already disabled the remote management and added the security features as per your guideline in unifi.athena.my, is it still possible that they can hack the DIR-615? Already logged a request asking them to change my PPPoE password. Hopefully this can happen soon though. sad.gif

Is there any way to tap into the Unifi network directly without the routers for the time being? Tried setting up dialup on my laptop but didn't work. Thanks for any help!
*
You will not be able to do a PPPoE dailup on your laptop without using a managed switch which supports VLAN Tagging.
If you have a spare router which supports DD-WRT, you could try using that as it supports VLAN tagging.

I have the following, i bought just to test if it can work with Unifi. It was successful. So now want to sell.

New D-Link DIR825 for sale @ RM300, flashed with DD-WRT can be used with Unifi (PPPoE only, I can setup IPTV for you with additional 5port switch). Has USB port can be used as print server, NAS or backup 3G USB Modem connection.

If i posted this in the wrong place, i'm sorry please let me know which thread? Tks.

I am curious does this 7.05 firmware work in other router, especially the retail version 615.  tongue.gif

You could try, you will need to edit the bin file with a hex editor. Let us know if its a success smile.gif

Oh ... i have retail 615, but i don want to try ... hahaha
This is because, from what i read, the retail 615 is a solid entry level hardware just bundled with a crap firmware.
So with a DDWRT firmware, its a solid router.

My TM router died on me 7 days after installation. This retail one is still going on steady .. smile.gif

I hope i dont get cursed anything this but after 2 replacement routers first one lasted about less then 24 after the day of installation and 2nd one was replaced about 6 days later. since then for 1 and a half months this particular TM 615 has been excellent. can put heavy load constant torrent and gaming at same time no lag plus some browsing and IPTV tested to perform well. so for me now i come to the conclusion that it a fault with the batch of routers given out not the actual router itself. It is not like TM trying to give poor quality ones out in my opinion. I even setup wireless printer/scanner and scan at high resolution therefore sending data at max 54 Mb G standard still ok.

I just hope this will last years. This is my 3rd router is exceed my expectations.

the 2nd times it broke, i had to call everyday for many days until scolding so many of the call center until some1 come here to replace. Such a pain.

I think TM need to find out why certain number of their dlink is like this.

If all TM routers performs like mine i can tell u don t really need to get alternative routers or firmwares as this is just fine.
*
But funny thing ...

Using TM 615 my upload is about 3 - 4mb/s
Using Retail 615 my upload is about 18 - 19mb/s

This still happens even today... i need to break my router one more time i think ... tongue.gif

Third time's a charm ... haha

That's right, if you have a Huawei BTU and planning to get another router and flash with dd-wrt [either Ralink or Atheros base], in the absent of RB250GS, you can configure as:

Huawei BTU[LAN1] ----> [WAN]dd-wrt router (create vlan?.500 & PPPoE dial-up) ----> computers
Huawei BTU[LAN2] ----> [WAN] DIR-165 (configure as bridge)[LAN4] ----> IPTV

Please read Riz's guide on how to:
Setup & create vlan?.500 for internet on your dd-wrt router, read the section "Setting up VLAN tagging and the PPPoE connection"
http://unifi.athena.my/index.php?option=co...id=53&Itemid=65
Setup DIR-615 as vlan:
http://unifi.athena.my/index.php?option=co...id=49&Itemid=61
*
This is my setup ...

Huawei BTU ---> 5port Switch ----> Splits to the below

---> TM DIR 615 ---> IPTV
---> DDWRT vlan.500 PPPoE ---> Computers

i don't think got matter with your dir-615 as mine run fine. usually is connection problem which you need to call tm though about why your upload slower than usual. with your package, upload should be around 6-7 mbps.

Yes maybe not TM fault for faulty router but more of their fault of not accepting that routers are failing and to investigate. I call them everyday for 6 days only they send some1 to replace. The problem was known in my case (faulty router) but they did not accept that and keep saying we send your case to 2nd level to investigate even when i tell them its the router. They ask me do things like on remove management to see if its incorrect settings which i cant even access they router page as it already crash when any device try to connect to it. TM need to wake up. I will have been fine if they send new one straight away next day when one breaks but they were stubborn.

When my 3rd one came i make sure this time they replace even the power socket.

Yes i noticed some people with very high speed test sometimes hard to believe. Maybe our speed is capped in the firmware of the TM 615. Any confirmations from others as well using non TM router and able to get higher speed?

i always think is capped from account level so wat ever equipment u use will result in same speed.
*
Some people like me claim that we get faster uploads with retail DIR-615, I also have friends who get fast uploads with TM 615 ...
So as mentioned above, could be a faulty batch ... ??

so it means, after subscribe the Unifi, then buy another unit DIR-615 and make a vlan bridge like in riz website? or, just replace the TM's DIR-615 with new retail DIR-615?
*
If you replace, then you only have PPPoE connection. If you add on you will have PPPoE on your new DIR-615 and IPTV on your TM DIR-615.

QUOTE(pinkeeywave @ Sep 20 2010, 03:30 PM)
dudes.. i got one question. read all the posting in this thread and bough the retail DIR 615. I tried to flash it the other day, to the TM 615's 7.05 firmware... the router immediately crashed.

then knowing something is wrong, then only i tried to flash that with DD-WRT, but it didn't work. then gave up, brought back to shop, the fella flashed it back to 3.03 WW. Now i can start fresh.

here comes my question. Now that i wanna flash it to DD-WRT, can i just use the one posted in (http://unifi.athena.my/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=65)?? item #2 below? it says here it's for rev D, what does it mean? the retail i bought is C2, will it work? all these version is making me  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif dunwan my retail router to crash again la

Prerequisites :

1. Original TM DIR-615 G1 firmware - http://unifi.athena.my/downloads/DIR615G1_FIRMWARE_705.rar
2. Brainslayer's DD-WRT DIR-615 REV D factory webflash - ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlay...ry-webflash.bin
3. Balls of steel

actually, i don't really care about the IPTV la.. i jsut want the freaking internet. my TM 615 died-ded....  vmad.gif  vmad.gif

bros, please advise
*
Which revision do you have?
Mine is C2
I have also done a D1 for a friend

Depends on the revision number, sometimes you need to edit the bin file with a hex editor so that the router will take the firmware.
