Im an intermediate violin player and I've only had one cheap violin ( RM640) that is only suitable for beginners. After one year of frustration playing this really really bad violin I decided to upgrade to a better violin
around RM2000-5500. The violin should be really good but yet affordable.
Just wondering, any of you know any great violin shop around KL and Selangor?
I really need to buy a new violin, bow, strings and etc. So it would be good if you can list some famous violin shops.
I heard someone said there is a shop in KL that sells Antonin Dvorak (Czech Republic) ranging from RM2500.00 to RM4880.00 and A.Melich (Czech Republic) RM6520.00; Lothar Semmlinger (Germany) ranging from RM6600 to Rm17610, Do any of you know any idea which shop it is?

I heard that Plaza Damas or BB is a great place to search for a violin but I need the address and etc.

Please someone help me,

~Terima kasih~

the one you mentioned should be euro music @ jalan imbi (some other music stores also located there like Ultimate Music, CK Music, JS Music etc).

if you don't mind buying from orchestra players, i'll let you know if my friend got any violins that fit the bill, old or new.

but my advice, for around RM3000, you can get very good china made violins. but still you have to choose individually.

if you insist to buy from shops, euro music and chamber music @ sungei wang plaza are the 2 that i recommend. a little expensive to buy in chamber but there're much worse shops selling RM2000 violin for RM8000.

Dear wnar,
Some violinist tend to blame their cheap violin when they themself don't play it well. They expect to be able to play and sound well if they get an expensive violin. Myself is no exception at the begining stage. It is only after when I lent my violin to be played by an experienced violinist, the music they make really blew me away. It is true that an expensive violin tend to sound somewhat better than a cheap one but most of it depends on how good the violinist is. My violin cost me less than Rm200.00 and is China made.

You are right I couldnt agree more with you, but I really think I need a better violin because my violin doesnt produce nice sound when played, Im not a bad violin player nor a good one but I know when I play well and when I dont play well. Sometimes there are techniques that I couldnt apply with my violin but with my friends' violins are all just fine. I love my cheap violin though, its my first violin, feels like my first love biggrin.gif . Haha.

Dear smcg,
Oh, I don't mind. Nothing to feel shy about what grade I have. I just passed this year's Grade 2 exam and now gunning for better grades. How about sharing yours then?

Dear wnar,
I also do own Antonin Dvorak violin that I play at home while the cheap violin is for music class. When new, the Dvorak violin did not sound as well but after playing it for some time, the reasonace comes out. I think the same goes for all violins. Sort of like breaking it or a simple analogy of buying new shoes where at first, it is uncomfortable but after wearing for a period it feels great. They said that the violin needs to be a part of you for it to express itself and come alive, literary speaking. Just listen to the Butterfly Lovers Concerto for violin and you will know what I mean.

I don't have any violin grade.. basically just start few lesson wif my fren.
Just wondering why don't use your better violin for the lesson since u have it? for most of the instruments they need time to season. the more tat u play, the sound better. for wnar, coz he's in intermediate level, he know what he want not only about the technique. i agree that technique is important but instrument also very important for a player. a better instrument will help to learn faster and make ppl enjoy it more.

Dear smcg,
I am still having a problem with the fingering. Sometimes my G natural becomes G# or even worse. tongue.gif As with all beginners, the violin teacher would place fingering tapes on the finger board so that you can know where to place your fingers on. I still have a tape on my violin. To put a tape on my better violin would be a no no and I am sure those with expensive violins will agree. It is like having a pimple on a person with nice complexion. ha ha ha. I hope that you do continue with your lessons and enjoy playing the violin. Sometimes, I feel pity for children when their parent forced them to take up musical instuments not of their choosing just to keep up with the Jones and later on in life give it up.

Wishing all, a Selamat Hari Raya Adilfitri and happy long weekend holiday ahead.

Hi, you may search for KS Strings PJ. They have new and pre-loved violins.

I have sent my boy to a music school nearby to learn violin since 6 months ago after numerous request from himself. I was sceptical at first due to my boy has short-lived enthusiasm in the past. However, I was willing to give it a try after reading many articles mentioning playing an instrument and learning music can have positive impacts on left and right brain functions. This can result in increased memory, language skills, executive functioning, and emotional responses. In order to track his learning progress, I have recorded his music piece to let him assess his performances. I think YouTube is a good platform to save & share the videos among families and as a good timeline tools to see a child progress in their learning journey.
