Apparently our iPhone 4 are the new batch, as it comes OTB with 4.0.2, and the speaker quality is significantly better than iPhone 3GS.

The photos won't rotate if you hold it wrongly even if you're holding it horizontally. If the position is correct, the camera icon should rotate as well.

If this still doesn't help, just perform a restore.

True. You can't charge ANYTIME you want. There's a pattern, which is simple to follow.
What if I charge only when the battery drops to 5% everyday?
