I dont really have any to recommend you as I just start recently and I dont know what kind of player are you.
Just so you know, warden and rune keeper is for premium which require you to spend real life money.

Races are important too for classes. Cause every race have different pros and cons.
Exclusive class such as captain is only for specific race like human or what they call it in LOTR, "race of man" lol.

Classes:-
Champion (which probably similar to melee dps)
Captain (melee dps with advantage of buffing and can summon a herald companion (interesting))
Burglar (debuffing,stealth. like a thief.)
Guardian (Tank)
Hunter (archer,range dps)
Lore master (summoner, healer, range dps)
Minstrel (buffer, healer, range dps)
Rune keeper (sorcerer type/ healing o_o)
Warden (javelin user im guessing its a melee as well)

Ill go for Rune keeper , that is if I have money to spend (which I dont,yet) cause I like magic,range and heal
But because I dont have that money to spend yet, I went for Lore keeper cause I love any game that have summoner class and its a range,magic and heal.

Just be what you want Anything that interest you. Because if you follow people recommendation and it doesnt suit your playstyle, you wouldnt have any fun to play wouldnt it?

Hehe, if you want to go for two hand, the choice is limited to only 2, which are the champion and the burglar as the rest are not capable of using two melee weapons at once.

Its either heavy shield(guardian) or light shield(captain) or use a 2 handed weapon.

They can use 2 handed weapons but not dual wield 2 weapons.

Ie: 1 handed sword/mace/axe/dagger/spear/hammer + 1 shield OR 2 handed sword/axe/halberd/hammer

NOT 1 handed sword + 1 handed axe

well, if you need a referrence for a captain, snowfire64 is the right person, as he has a lvl 68 captain...

Nah, captain's skill are mostly easy to use when you are solo-ing. Captains are the support class. Buffing and healing. We are one of the lowest dps in the game too. Haha.

I think champ has more active skills than captains. But yeah, champ have AoE attacks which easily kill few mobs.

Nope, we are one of the needed class in group because of our buff   So don't worry much about grouping. Experience are not divided like other online games. Instead, every members gets exp based on their levels and the mobs they killed.

experience from kills are divided evenly in within the fellowship..same goes to the silver coins looted.... but in this game you get more exp by completing quests....

for your information, each character class have their own specialities, captain is one of the most demanded character in the game, with tanks (guardian mostly)  and healers (minstrel usually, rune keeper also can heals) being the most sought after in the glff channel when people looking for fellowship member...

hunter - ranged dps..pew pew from a far. can also lay trap.

champion - melee dps, can remove corruption ( aka mob's boss buff). can be secondary tank.

burglar - provide debuffs (or hex as in other game call it). also initiate fellowship maneuver using certain skills which is very useful in instances. can sneak.

loremaster - debuffs, crowd control, also provide power when needed. have pet than can fight alongside.

minstrell - heals the fellowship, can also provides buffs, can also do dps.

runekeeper - do tactical ( or magical as in other games) dps. can also heals.

guardian/warden - tank mostly.
captain - provide buffs mostly. can also do dps. can also be secondary healer.
so basically no character class is better than the other... i basically would party with a captain anytime, especially doing skirmish duo. everyone loves captain's buffs...
