Hi all, just bought a 8 weeks old toy poddle yesterday from Summer Pet SS2.

After we brought it home to penang (5 hours car travel),
today he started to sneeze intermittently with loud breathe and sleeps once he can lie on anyone's body. Is this normal?
i'm worried if he's sick

@fx_53_xt Isn't it too young to travel for ur 8mths pup? Be careful not to exposed ur pup to public and places with dog.
*
The very first question i ask to the shop owner was about the transportation of the puppy and he assures me it is perfectly fine to do so.
This is my very first encounter with a puppy and i have no experience nor idea how to take care of him.

However, he slept through most of the journey and doesn't appears to have problem travelling.
Now i found out he is very sensitive to temperature. Slightly colder environment, places with fan and stronger wind or places with air conditioning and he will start sneezing.

WHAT? I hope you don't abandon your poodle when they grown up! You should do lots of research before you get one not get one because you feel like having one or to show off! You should not 100% trust one seller only! They only want profit!

Please do more reading. Don't be another irresponsible dog's owner! Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh but I can't accept those who never even care to do research before owning a dog! Owning a dog is a lifetime commitment!
I'm here to ask for advise from the experienced and i don't like the way you jump to conclusion so fast without knowing the real me.
You're not helping me in any ways by your egoistic reply.
Everyone starts from nothing before they something.

Anyway, the puppy is fine now. Visited vets and were assured that he is perfectly healthy though a bit starved. I'm increasing his meal portion a little.
I am also looking for ways to bath him in a correct way. He's very frightened by water the first time bathed him (ironically poodle is trained as duck hunter).

On bathing them, don't bath too often yet. They are too young and if not careful, water can go into their lungs through nose and can cause fatality. The best way is to bath them in a basin or a bucket. Fill the water with warm water(not too hot n cold) up to his chest level.wet him first and  apply his shampoo on the sponge and wipe him thorough from tail to head. When rinsing him with water, use ur hand to block his nose before u rinse his face part. Make sure you bath him fast as he might catch a cold if too long. When he is older, you can bath him from shower head (warm) and u need to comb him during shower.

Hope I help this round and there's no way any can help based on ur previous question. Will try to help if I can. Share a pic of ur pup, introduce to us. smile.gif Btw, water dog is their ancestor only. Toy poodle are as a result of cross breeding of other breed. Therefore not all poodles love water. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the advice. He'd taken his 2nd bath during the weekend quite well !

Now please meet Biibii,Male, D.O.B 22/11/2010, 0.98KG !
Attached Image

He'd just taken his 2nd vaccination yesterday and doctor says he's gotten a yeast infection in his ears and now he has to put on this medicated lube named "Oridermyl" once a day for a week long.

I read somewhere that his food Eukanuba Puppy Small Breed may have assisted in accelerating yeast infection and i plan to change it. Read on dogfoodanalysis.com about Orijen but i also taken note that in the review, it says that high protein contents in orijen would make them grow huge (which me and bii's mummy do not wish to) and therefore not suitable for small breed. Any thoughts on food that can keep him small and not sacrificing his health as well as my wallet?

One headache i have with ah bii now is that he goes all around and lick/bite whatever he can find. He swallowed a small piece of cotton while we were sleeping in the mid night but thank god he released the cotton together with his poo the next day. Imagine that now i mop the floor almost every other day fearing that he would have licked some foreign dirt again. sweat.gif

I also have problem toilet training him as he goes around and poo/pee around. There was one day i successfully to get him to pee/poo on the tray by giving him snacks but it seems he forgotten all the next day.

Lastly, the pet shop told me that his MKA cert have not arrived but he already has microchip implanted. I called MKA yesterday and they confirmed that his microchip serial number is inside their record but they couldn't say when the cert can be delivered. I also try to confirm with MKA that Biibii is a toy poodle and not just normal poodle (quite a number of my friend go cheated this way by pet shop), but the receptionist was a bit blurred and she simply answer me yes whistling.gif

@fx_53_xt: Messi food starts with Iskhan and later changed to Artemis. Iskhan is a bit hard to find, but I think Iskhan control their size better. I changed to Artemis as nobody have actually heard about Iskhan that time. Artemis cost only about RM42 for puppy and you can get 10% if you are members of The Pets Family (Taman Megah,  Kepong Village Mall and few more).
I plan to change to these few brand:
Artemis fresh mix small breed RM42 (4star, 28%, 17%, 48%) (4)
Acana puppy small breed RM56 (5star, 37%, 19%, 36%)(2)
Avoderm puppy RM39 (4star, 29%, 11%, 52%) (1)
Orijen Puppy RM65 (5star, 42%, 18%, 32%) (5)
Now Puppy RM87 (4star, 28%, 18%, 45%)(1)

I have a complete post about my food concern over in the food thread. smile.gif

He is too young to be roam freely though.
roam freely simply means i don't lock him in cage. My living room isn't that big anyway and most of the time he stay in my study room on the bed while i'm working. (i don't mind ah bii sleeping on my bed xD)

QUOTE(yeowa @ Feb 21 2011, 09:46 AM)
On MKA, it takes about 7months from the day I brought him home to receive it. I just got his last month. SO, no worries. Feeding is important to ensure he won't grow into miniature. And you need to teach him from young so he is more obedient. Btw, messi is not allowed to go on my bed, sofa and anything human sits on. This is to train them to let them know despite we love them, they are still dog and to avoid them have the thoughts that they are your master. smile.gif

You can PM me anytime if you need urgent advice. At least I can notice your PM on my blackberry. smile.gif

It takes 7 months for the cert to arrive ? shakehead.gif
Btw, when you say "feeding is important to ensure he wont grow into miniature", mind to elaborate on that? Currently i am feeding him 3 times a day (8am-2pm-8pm), each time a spoon full mixed with warm water till they soften. I'm also giving him vitamin gel three times a week.

hi fx, woo so nice your poodles can roam freely, wont cause any accident pee or poo around th bed or floor? im damn worry as the poodle will pee or poo on the matters.. sure going to be a headache to wash especially in condo, limited space to sun dry the stuff also.. so now i left him at play pen with its cage too , to train him pee poo in the cage ><"
*
To my surprise, he never pee/poo on the bed. He would pee/poo every time i brought him down to my living room. If he's too urgent, you can see he'll run nervous on the bed. Guess what, even when he sneeze, he would go to the edge of the bed where there's nothing around and sneeze into air. And i never trained him to do all this !

QUOTE(yeowa @ Feb 21 2011, 02:37 PM)
each spoon full = teaspoon or tablespoon? Mine at that time should be only quarter milk powder spoon x 2 times only. Started with half spoon. Just feel the tummy, as long as he is not too small (just slightly smaller than the rib) he should be full.
*
i use the chicken rice plastic spoon, the one chicken rice hawker give you when you tapao chicken rice. One spoon full x3 a day. That's too much i guess? The first time i visited the vet during CNY, the vet told me he was starving blush.gif , and i always thought i was underfeeding him since he looks starved all the time.

*
yeah, he drinks lesser than when he just came home previously. What i did is i add lots of water with his kibble. For some reason, my ah bii for sure have to drink all the water before he start chewing his kibble

Bought Artemis from Pets Family just now for RM42. There was only 2 packs left and that made me worried as someone has mentioned about unstable supplies of Artemis could sometime leads to total shortage.

Visited Pets Lover Center later and they have lots of them. They even have Iskhan that you mentioned, Fish4dog and some other rare brand but it was too late as i already bought Artemis.

hi fx how does artemix food? and your poodle respond? i plan to get 1 pack today and mix with pro best, hope that my poodle can increase his intake, seem abit skinny can feel the abdomen chest bone, but today eating happily also.

beside artemix, which brand of food you suggest also?
*
It was midnight when i'm back and therefore ah bii doesn't have the chance to try out his new artemis. I will start changing gradually today but i believe the hungry ghost that lives inside will take this without problem.

After doing two full day of research, i narrowed down to this 5 :
QUOTE
Artemis fresh mix small breed
-reasonable pricing
-surprisingly good ingredient list
-one of the few high ranked food with <30% protein

Acana puppy small breed
-higher protein content
-huey80 commented acana causes tear stain in poodle

Orijen Puppy
-Best rated food
-sky high protein content

Iskhan
-recommended by quite a few forumer including yeowa
-exact ingredient not clear, i cant even google it out cause its korean brand
-not many retailer has it. So far i've only seen in PLC

Now Puppy
-The priciest among all
-Despite the high price, there's 2 red-flagged ingredient in dogfoodadvisor, and only 1 meat product in first 5 ingredient
-another high ranked food with <30% protein
If your poodle exercise a lot and you want to build its body faster, you probably should be looking at higher protein% such as Orijen instead of Artemis. If you have time, pay a visit to the dog food thread as it helps a lot in making my decision.

You didn't apply for the membership ah? Member can get 10% discount and the amount paid can be converted into points that can be used as a discount to future purchase. I know PLC got Iskhan, just I don't feel like continuing Iskhan. Lol... smile.gif
*
I did, but the cashier said i can only user the membership card on my next purchase doh.gif

Hungry ghost? So familiar... Messi also the same... Lol...
Nvm, next purchase quite worth it also... Can be used for grooming also... I groom messi there. smile.gif
*
Initially when i brought him home i thought i was underfeeding, starving him and i increased his portion of meal. Then slowly i realize it seems like all poodle puppy behave like this and i stop increasing his portion.
Pet family charge RM30 for basic grooming right? I think the groomer near my house is cheaper at only RM20. There's even an auntie who offer me on-site grooming at my house for RM20 thumbup.gif

QUOTE(huey80 @ Feb 22 2011, 12:49 PM)
One of it being Iskhan...

A small reference here : http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/dogs/...k~1/9441~1.aspx

Based on my personal experience or knowledge, the following ingredients r questionable

1. beet pulp : a by-product & potentially cause tear stains in poodles

2. Chitosan : this term reminds me of those slimming products human take to lose weight - dunno if this applies to dogs. Maybe that's y breeders promote this brand to keep their pups in shape. I rber a kibble supplier fren told me that many breeders feed this brand to their pregnant females so that they can produce smaller pups.

3. CHinese herbs : such as?? ginseng? wats the function?

4. menadione vitamin K : controversial ingredient; man-made vit K
NO matter wat ppl say abt the goodness of Orijen and it can be fed to poodles which r active (u hv to be very active to work off 40% protein lo...), i have YET to see or know a small-sized or a real TOY size poodle that is on this brand.

If u know one adult toy poodle who has been taking Orijen since puppyhood, pls show me so that i'll hv a broader view on Orijen.
*
The problem with researching and reading online is everyone has their own controversial opinion about one same topic with no one's argument being supported by any proper scientific research/proof. Its not like anyone knows for exact where did the 40% protein actually goes to. Therefore i think for the moment i am satisfied with my choice of Artemis that has moderate amount of protein with no controversial ingredients. Cheers. nod.gif

QUOTE(aileyteo @ Feb 22 2011, 01:28 PM)
hmm.....just for my opinion since im fed my shnauzer w Orijien brand ard 5mths. so far she r so heathy n w/o any sickness. as normal im bring her out of garden walked two times dairy. so i cant felt anything different to me especially her body shape. but on tis mth w CNY bring them back hometown or may be she less of excersice (stay in house). im can totally felt tat her weight increase a lot ,dunno y ...just one week...it is too high protein for Orijien brands can make them fat? now im change other brand w less of protein de coz  im may consider thier future ..now she young is ok  but when getting old?
*
No matter what brand you feed, i think 5 months is too short to tell anything. If a dog food can cause your dog to develop serious problem in 5 months, it must be made from toxic rolleyes.gif
And again, even for dogs who develop illness after 10 years time, we wont know for sure too if its the food who's causing the problem. There's just too much environmental factor involved.

Bottom line, make a rational judge yourself and go for the brand trusted.

QUOTE(yeowa @ Feb 22 2011, 01:50 PM)
Messi's breeder no longer use Iskhan loo... But I see very obvious changes in him when change from Iskhan to Artemis. Anyway, that was my mistake in not able to measure properly... Lol... Iskhan 3 spoon is artemis 1.5 or 2 spoon. My bad... smile.gif
*
does that means messi grows faster by feeding artemis?

gathering, arghhhh. wait till biii is old enough then i'll join u guys.
Yesterday when i was back from work, ah bii was playing with his nutrient supply gel that accidentally fell into his cage. he has the gel all over his body vmad.gif
took me whole night to clean him up, and even now his cheek and coating is still slightly oily cry.gif

On the other hand I'm also worried how to soothe my dad's temper down once he sees my dog cage at the living room cos my dad is quite against me having a pet dog.. Sigh...
*
me and my gf's family did not quite like pet dog too. But to our surprise, they take the poodle in quite well and loved him so much. Heck even now we're back to KL, both our parents still call once in a while to check on the dog!
(p/s: they never bother to call and check on how their own kid is doing that often also doh.gif)

So who knows your parents will be like mine once they see how cute these little furkids are?
