My two cents. Go for Mulu. Great caves to explore. And there are also hiking trails there. Check out the Pinnacles. It's a much challenging hike compared to Kinabalu. Was doing a search for place to go, then realize that it's a world heritage site.

BTW, you would need to book ahead (few months at least) if you are going for Kinabalu.
