common misconception right there. the kesultanan melayu originated from sumatera, that's a fact. but malays have lived in tanah melayu long before that. and if the proto malay theory is correct (about the origins of the malays from yunnan/mongol), then the proto malays would have to exist first in tanah melayu before expanded into deutero malays who're primarily seafarers and start to island hop from tanah melayu to indonesia and eventually up to new zealand.
