i3 does not affect i5 & i7 in general.
We've seen Nehalem i3 clock at 4.2-4.6GHz. It didn't affect the sale of i5 & i7 ('cos simply an overclocked i5/i7 is still faster than overclocked i3. Speed is never enough).
We've seen it before, like the overclocked Celeron 300A@450MHz was as fast as Pentium III.

i3-2100 is a POS because it has only 5-8% of OC headroom. It's about 30% faster than Nehalem i3.
For Nehalem i3, it has 50-60% of OC headroom.

i5-2500K/i7-2600K remains in comfort zone.
Intel is lacking i3-xxxxK to compete in the low end.
It's not about phasing out now. It's about competition.
I see there is a stiff competition in the low-medium end.

FYI, notebook manufacturers are selling Sandy Bridge Pentium B940 with lower clocked HD3000 @ MYR1299-1599 (that's exactly the same segment of Zacate C & E).
It's full size notebook with SB processor @ the price of MYR1299 (call it charity, if you like).
Competition would drive the price down. It benefits us - consumers.

P/S
Intel will need to come up with "something" to compete. What would that be?

there are actually few more factors that should take-in consideration, K-series proc is meant for overclockers which are minority group of the consumers (will the marketing strategy to lower down the selling price juz to target this group of plp?)

Besides, in order to utilize the overclock ability, it needs to pair with p67/z68 which the mobo itself already cost rm450 and above, so tat's isn't meant for budget low-end user anymore..so when we count-in all the factors and build a system (K-series proc + P67 mobo + discrete GPU / K-series proc + z68 mobo), i think the 'low-cost/ low-end spec' does not seems applicable here..

What a pain.

With the A8-3850 costing RM469 at Cycom, any Bulldozer or FX chip is likely to be further away from my preferred price range (RM300-RM400). In addition to that, with the A8-3850 being comparable to the Athlon II X4 635, I've looked up AnandTech's Athlon II X4 635 comparison against my Phenom II X3 710 only to find slightly poorer gaming performance and improvements only in multi-threaded problems due to the extra core. And my current Phenom II X3 710 cost me about RM350, which is considerably cheaper than the A8-3850. If I were to buy an A8-3850, it would be like side-stepping instead of moving solidly forward. grumble.gif

At least I would get to look forward to a performance improvement in x264 encoding if I did buy one. Quick Sync is crap. grumble.gif

well..for ur case, it is not worth to spend another RM800-900 to upgrade to Llano system..juz get urself a decent discrete GPU will do..
for me Llano is not an upgrade option, but is a good choice for plp who is going to build a new rig..
