QUOTE(lee_what2004 @ Oct 8 2010, 08:01 PM) Isn't GDDR3 and DDR3 is the same in GPU? No. Not the same. GDDR memory run at higher cock rate than DDR memory. DDR3 is a cheaper alternative compare to GDDR3. GPU equipped with DDR memory will be slower than GPU with GDDR memory. This post has been edited by kizwan: Oct 8 2010, 08:15 PM

QUOTE(lee_what2004 @ Oct 8 2010, 08:17 PM) Isn't the "G" is just denoted to Graphics, which sometimes get taken off? You can check at wiki or notebookcheck for more information. For sure DDR3 is not GDDR3.

QUOTE(lee_what2004 @ Oct 8 2010, 08:30 PM) Well, from what I've read, DDR3 is the same with GDDR3, with actually it should be referred to GDDR3 since DDR3 is for the RAM on the system, while GDDR3 is referring to the RAM on GPU... Where do you read it? Please refer this & this.

QUOTE(lee_what2004 @ Oct 8 2010, 09:05 PM) Okay, seems like its different... Thanks. Sorry. I didn't mean to offended you. Just stating the facts, that all. Let just forget about the memory stuff. QUOTE(ketapang @ Oct 8 2010, 08:38 PM) using optimus and set it to high. i think vsync still nt disabled. i dunno if my driver is the latest or not, but when i play any game, i think it uses the 310m. i think both ddr3. the only differrence is the memory. hw can i disable optimus? I think you're still using old driver. Please download & install latest driver from Nvidia website. I don't have/play DOTA, so I don't know about it. Do you have 2GB or 4GB ram? SC2 run much snappier on my Dell with 4GB compared to my Asus with 2GB only. But this mostly on loading part & when the game use a lot of memory. You can set GT310M as default (preferred graphic processor) GPU on Nvidia control panel.

QUOTE(kizwan @ Oct 6 2010, 07:18 PM) Thank you for checking it for me. SMBUS controller is part of the Intel chipset. It monitors your system board's temperature and voltage. Programs that read your hardware sensors need the controller. On my notebook several day ago, SMBUS controller suddenly detected in Everest software. But now it disappear again. This behavior is kinda odd. Usually on modern computer, SMBUS controller should exist. I already sent an email to Asus support about this. Still no reply from them yet. It already pass 48 hours since I log that report. Very poor support. Not like Dell. QUOTE(RedDevils88 @ Oct 6 2010, 10:29 PM) i think you should just give them a call. I just got a reply from ASUS support today after asking about it at ASUS Malaysia Facebook wall. I already replied back to them. Now waiting their reply. I hope they can provide concrete answer this time.

QUOTE(cIvIc_noob @ Oct 9 2010, 03:26 PM) Hi i am considering to get a new laptop, i wanna ask Asus user here, 1.the 2 years international warranty is onsite/ carry in? 2.If extend to 3 years on site how much? 3.and im based in east malaysia, is there a service centre to carry in if the warranty is only carry in? 1. Carry in 3. Where exactly? Because I know one at Penang. There is ASUS service center (drop point) at Imbi/Low Yat Plaza called ASUS Royal Club I think. QUOTE(dante10 @ Oct 9 2010, 09:07 PM) i guess i dont have to worry about my a42jv hitting 80+ on gpu and cpu.guess its quite normal right? Yeah, don't worry too much. The fan already doing a good job in controlling the temperature during playing games. * If you're an expert/advanced user who like to mod your computer, you can always apply better thermal paste or mod the heatsink with copper shim(s). The later will definitely lower the temperature.

QUOTE(Pacifist @ Oct 10 2010, 11:54 AM) Hey guys!! Another problem happen to me..Recently my right speaker produce static noise..Not often though..Mostly when I boot the laptop..Hmm I wonder why...Was it faulty device(hardware) or software conflict?? Haven't update the driver yet..Not major problem for me but I hope it can be repair w/o send it to ASUS.. BTW I'm a42jv user.. Try uninstall the audio driver including the software (SRS), reboot, let windows install default driver, re-install audio driver, reboot & test. See whether it still produce static noise or not.

QUOTE(w33wawa @ Oct 10 2010, 10:16 PM) Asus A series laptop have sunken hinge design...so cant possible upgrade to 8 or 9 cell battery right? As far as I know, there is only 6 cell battery for A42 series notebook. Asus didn't provide any other option for battery on A42 series though. The only solution is mod the battery. There are a couple of shop at Low Yat Plaza provide this kind of service. You can mod the battery with 6 cell 6600 mAh instead of the original 6 cell 4400 mAh. Acer TimelineX 4820TG have 6 cell 6600 mAh. But the question is does A42 series noteboook can support 6600 mAh battery? QUOTE(w33wawa @ Oct 10 2010, 10:16 PM) Asus G series battery smaller than A series but have longer battery life? wtf =X You just can't compare like that. QUOTE(AlexLai @ Oct 11 2010, 08:14 AM) The 2GB VRAM also doesn't show much improvement in performance at all. Yeah. I just impressed they fitted it with 2GB. Added on October 11, 2010, 11:04 amQUOTE(astria @ Oct 11 2010, 08:16 AM) i doubt it will even need 1GB anyway... It might be useful for CUDA (or OpenCL) development/programming. QUOTE(astria @ Oct 11 2010, 11:08 AM) well, not too sure abt GPGPU, but as far as a consumer is concerned, even projects like Folding@Home takes up only abt 100MB... Google SketchUp require at least 512MB VRAM. I think a lot of people (including student) who use Google SketchUp a lot might be interested with 2GB VRAM.

QUOTE(astria @ Oct 11 2010, 11:30 AM) it's only OpenGL 1.5 which means DX9.0 (not even 9.0c)... means older GPU still using vertex shader and pixel shders will do... and by that it means no GPGPU will be involved... Of course older GPU will do. LOL. More memory will smooth things up. Another example is Autodesk 3ds Max. Recommended to use it with 1GB or more VRAM. My friend use both software a lot.

QUOTE(astria @ Oct 11 2010, 11:49 AM) but think in another way... even desktop GTX 480 also come with 1.5GB of RAM only, so is the upcoming desktop Radeon HD6900... Yeah, I know. I agree 1GB VRAM is more than enough to play demanding games like Bad Company 2 you mention earlier. My friend like to do 3D design (freelance job, he work in IT company though). When on computer with limited VRAM, rendering on 3ds Max take a very long time. He is lucky if it doesn't crash or BSOD. If not he need to do it again.

QUOTE(astria @ Oct 11 2010, 01:11 PM) in that case ur friend should be looking for a Quadro or FirePro instead of GeForce or Radeon... consumer GPU are never meant to be for work like 3ds Max even though the hardware is the same... I beg to differ. My friend like to play games too. He is a designer & also an IT professional. "consumer" GPU also can work for 3D design & development. Actually it work much better.
