To cheesenium and limlim78, I just received my unit from GentechPC (manufactured July 2010) last Saturday, and have been playing SC2 with all on ultra. No GSODs whatsoever. I am running stock Bios 209 and stock Catalyst drivers. I suppose I should run furmark to really test it, but I figure as long as it works OK to do the stuff I need it do, why bother... (opinions differ on this hehe)
My GPU temps max at 91-92 degrees C with stock thermal paste. |

@riku2replica - yeah
@limlim78 - OK my cost breakdown: GenTechPC: base cost 1645 - discount 49.35 + wire fee 30 = USD 1625.65 Maybank TT: RM 25 + USD 21 (Citibank US - 3rd party agent fee) = USD 29 Comgateway: USD 96.87 TOTAL: USD 1751.52 (approx RM 5520) |

QUOTE(Viperion @ Sep 1 2010, 04:21 PM) I have read on some forums that a few owners got it done by their retailers. I can't really vouch for them because for TIM it's nearly impossible for you to check if they actually re-pasted for you. Even if you were to remove the notebook yourself and check the TIM used by ASUS is practically the same color with IC TIM. The only way to tell is to monitor your temperatures and compare with users like me who have re-pasted with the same TIM as your unit. Will do! Nice temperatures, I used to get temps like those when I first got my unit. Keep track of your temperatures and it it rises after a month please do let us know. After a month on running my laptop, SC2 was maxing out my GPU temps at 95~100 degrees C with stock thermal paste. After IC Diamond re-paste I'm maxing out at around 70~74 degrees C By the way, what do you guys think of the Power4Gear utility. Seems useful, but some people recommend removing it. Does it really hurt performance? |

I decided to see what would happen if I updated my drivers to 10.8 without updating stock BIOS and vBIOS, and i promptly got black screen of death on furmark and sc2.
Anyway I chickened out and restored from disk image so things are back to normal now. Haven't worked up the guts to update BIOS and vBIOS yet seeing that everything works OK on my lappy with stock BIOS and drivers.. But keep us updated bro.. p.s. my temps are still OK.. went up to 92.5 max once when playing SC2. Pls let me know what fps you are getting on SC2. Jeffrey, I am afraid I don't know what to suggest for your problem except doing what I did not have the b**s to do (update BIOS, vBIOS and drivers). Maybe you could ask the notebookreview people. EDIT: What browser crashes? Tried with FF, IE and Chrome? Could be a Flash issue or sound drivers. This post has been edited by voleman: Sep 7 2010, 10:17 PM |

OK I worked up enough courage and updated 211 BIOS, Gary's vBIOS and 10.8 drivers.
No more black SOD, Furmark 1920x1080/stability/xtreme burning/8xMSAA gives me 87 degC after 15 mins (it's LESS than before which was 92-93 after 10 mins!! woot!! maybe cuz of 211 fan speed? i'm on stock paste) But I *think* I am getting a slight performance hit on SC2. Not sure though. |

QUOTE(Trrienty @ Sep 10 2010, 07:19 PM) Thanks for your offer bro! Ken replied my email and said that my package will be pick up by USPS tomorrow! Let's see is that so. If not then i might need to trouble you umm... I would wait until you get the unit and test it using furmark before deciding to repaste. Not all units need to be repasted.. pasting is a PITA, so my opinion is don't do it unless you have to.For the re-paste thing, is it advisable to do it straight after i got my unit? If no problem with that i will take the paste! @coolman91 - I got my standard A1 unit for around USD 1750 including courier shipping.. Probably the Win7 ultimate also contributes to your unit's price. This post has been edited by voleman: Sep 10 2010, 09:07 PM |

QUOTE(thxxht @ Sep 20 2010, 04:25 PM) this was Ken Lee's reply when i asked him about it. No.. he's probably referring to USPS delivery (US postal service) which they use for international orders.i'm assuming he is refering to comgateway's delivery (DHL). If you use comgateway, you need to tell Ken to deliver to the US address which the comgateway website gives you. In this case, GentechPC will ship using UPS since it is within USA. In my case, it took 4 days for UPS to deliver to comgateway. Then you have to wait for comgateway to inform you they received it, then you pay comgateway, after which they will ship to you via DHL (4 days for me). For me it took 11 days (incl weekend) from the time GentechPC shipped it out until it reached my door. It is probably faster if you ask gentechpc to send directly to you via USPS, but its bit more expensive and there is risk of you not getting it delivered to your doorstep (either held up by poslaju or kastam) |

QUOTE(thxxht @ Sep 20 2010, 05:16 PM) i think the G53 itself has very good cooling (check out the youtube reviews). max CPU temperature was around 78C at load (100C maximum allowable temp for i7). I think the thermal paste is not necessary but it's free if you upgrade from stock processor, so why not? The paste will help cooling further, and help prolong your cpu's lifespan. no probs man, just passing on the karma.thanks for clarifying, i intent to use comgateway, i don't really have confidence in poslaju and our custom. make sure you keep us updated on your quest @JasonMania: For the G73jh models, many owners decided to repaste their GPU because of heat issues on the ATI Mobility 5870. But you are looking at G53 which houses a GTX460M, so no one really knows how the temp 'trends' will be. Anyway it's your call on this. This post has been edited by voleman: Sep 20 2010, 05:27 PM |

QUOTE(Collienz @ Sep 25 2010, 11:24 PM) i am interested in buying a G73JH-B1.. has done alot of research and thx to everyone's contribution on this forum topic.. i have now confirm wat to get for the laptop... just a few question i would like to ask.. is buying from xoticpc a good choice?.. plus delivery and customization..(ram hertz and No Dead Pixel warranty[dont really know how it works... sigh]..) minus the blue ray drive)... the total cost incremented to to the total of USD2,126.00 izzit worth it? Price seems a bit high.. a standard B1 with bluray drive should not cost you more than USD 1900 with delivery via comgateway. I wouldn't go for ram hertz upgrade. Not worth it i think, and many units come with 1333Hz even though it is listed as 1066 in the order.Standard Manufacturer Dead Pixel Warranty is free from GentechPC. Not sure what the no dead pixel warranty covers in addition to that. You should check with reseller. What else are you customizing? Xoticpc has good reputation too. Many of us bought from GentechPC and have received excellent service (contact ken@gentechpc.com) This post has been edited by voleman: Sep 27 2010, 10:23 AM |

QUOTE(thxxht @ Oct 13 2010, 02:38 PM) just a slight update, my package is at comgateway and they are preparing to ship it to malaysia. I used express delivery, the fee was USD 114. Don't know how fast it will be delivered, but i probably don't expect to get it this week. Yes Comgateway uses DHLweight was bout 8.6kg, pretty heavy. The experience was quite tense as GenTech was unable to give me a proper tracking for my delivery and further more, they used FedEX instead of UPS 3 day as originally stated in my invoice. They say it's faster but when i finally looked at the tracking, it was no difference (still 3 days, 5 days to be exact, was sent on last friday), maybe they're cutting cost by using the cheaper fedex, i don't know but I was not too pleased. another thing is that i wanted them to check for dead pixels and any other abnormalies before sending. I doubt they've done it since they delivered on last friday. We'll see when i get my package. also, can anyone that used comgateway confirm if they use DHL to deliver? it was not stated in my comgateway invoice. |
