so far i yet to upgrade to 13.1 albeit peeps says KDE 4.5 is update-able and it had resolve most issues but i still miss 3.5.x version..
Desktop Environment, GNOME, KDE, XFCE, LXDE etc etc..

instead of playing with 'what uses more ram', have you tried ctrl + esc to check applications for ram usage?
the last time i checked mine was roughly 1 year ago when a sudden slow down during KDE boot up, discovered i forgot to include swap during installation |
