Auckland: An application on the iPhone, a multimedia smartphone designed by Apple Inc, uses global positioning system (GPS) technology to track down gay people and help them meet one another.

The iPhone application - Grindr - uses the iPhone's GPS system to let its users see a list of other gay men in the vicinity, and also provides vital statistics such as height, weight, age, ethnic background, and even a photo, New Zealand Herald reported.

The new technology has proved to be a hit with the country's homosexual community, and Grindr developer Joel Simkhai said it solved a key problem - knowing who else in your immediate vicinity is gay.

A similar version for lesbians will be out by the end of the year, Simkhai said.

Former editor of Gay New Zealand portal, Matt Akersten said hundreds of local gay men have embraced the application.

"You might not be in the traditionally gay areas - you could be in one of the smaller centres - and you just plug it in and realise you're not alone, and there are other people like you out there, it's a great networking tool," he said.

The application, however, has an accuracy rating of plus or minus three km, he said.

Android > Iphone
1. Multimedia data transfer is easier (Iphone uses sync which is limited to a single pc and the needs for itunes)
2. Flash playable browser
3. Swype input is simply the best invention for touch screen phones
4. Customizable dynamic UI

Iphone > Android
1. More games, and apps support
2. Better scroll and pan control response
3. Stable and easy to use for mediocre user
4. Accessories availabilities

iPhone and BlackBerry likely to remain M'sian favourites
By LEONG HUNG YEE
hungyee@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: Apple Inc’s iPhone and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry are likely to remain a hit with Malaysians for now although sales of Google Android phones have overtaken the two smartphone models in the United States.

Analysts said the mighty iPhone and Blackberry would continue to sell like hot cakes in Malaysia as choices for the Android were still limited locally.

They are not discounting that the Android-powered phone will overtake iPhone or BlackBerry in Malaysia when the market becomes more mature and receptive towards the new operating system used in the Android.

An analyst said the smartphone market remained healthy.

“Overall sales are buoyant. Google, which has thrown its Android all over the place, is making its presence felt and the market became more competitive,” he said, adding that Microsoft would make the competition stiffer with its Windows Phone 7 Series handsets later this year.
