I would like to suggest that you try learning more about musical terms-- after all one should know more about what you're listening to at the moment other than "it sounds good!"

Orchestras by definition are large instrumental ensembles-- they're not music bands, really. don't have names with D minor in them, what you're thinking of is the pieces they play e.g. Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

Famous orchestras: Berliner Philharmoniker, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Viennese Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, too many to list. Easier if you go by composer, conductor and/or soloists, actually. Some well known conducters are Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan and Kurt Masur.

Good orchestral CDs-- get ones from Electra Nonesuch, Telarc or Naxos, should have good recording. EMI have also got a lot of box sets; arg I WANTWANTWANT that 26 CD set of Rostropovich's complete recordings on their label... I have a 4 CD box set of the complete Beethoven String Quartets played by the Borodin String Quartet under the Virgin label that is very nice. There's also a 1975 recording of Beethoven's Ninth under the Philips Classics label that is beautiful. Oh, and if you ever see the CD set with Trevor Pinnock playing the complete harpsichord works of J.S. Bach, PLEASE let me know in a hurry because I've been wanting that for years. Also look for stuff by Yo-yo Ma, Jacqueline du Pre, Hilary Hahn, etc.

If you're into opera stuff-- Wagner's Ring cycle is fantastic, albeit seriously long. Mozart's Die Zauberflote is definitely worth a listen. Try out Bruckner and Mahler's symphonies as well as all the other better known composers.

Finally, go listen to these compositions LIVE and support our local music scene as well by going to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra's performances! Nothing really beats a live performance in a concert hall, and since the MPO has Sunday afternoon matinees with relatively cheap ticket prices (RM15 for students and RM20 at the cheapest price for Sunday afternoons) you have no excuse not to go if you're in the Klang Valley and love classical orchestral music.
