hi walabies,

I guess maybe it would be more appropriate to put my queries here... smile.gif, and hope you can give me  some good recommendations.

I am looking for a good SQ headset, comfortable for long hour use, compact and fold-able is a plus point since I will be using it a lot for traveling, good sound isolation and good leakage handling, and I like clean clarity sound with some bass.

My source would be my Hi-Fi set at home, ipod when traveling, and notebook/ipod when in office.

My budget would be not more than RM1500.

many thanks.

Hi seaeann, I have a few suggestion here.

There is a very good one here, which a lot of people will agree with my opinion.
The audio technica ESW9. Foldable, portable and very elegant woody housing.
Sound is sweet mids, spacious, and very subtly bass present. Not those crazy bass spreading all over the place.

Another few options that you can have is using audio technica ES7 or even shure SRH840, you can add in an portable amplifier to spice up your music, sometimes it will sound better than the higher ends if you pair them well. You portable amplifier can be used on other headphone/earphone as well.. I am suggesting a go-vibes martini in the middle.

ES7 is the little brother of ESW9, sound is slightly inferior without amp with a ATH sound signature. Shure SRH840 is the Shure flagship headphone. Shure will be brighter, but kindda of a neutral, flatter sound. Have a readout here...
http://themacfeed.com/2009/11/review-shure-srh840/

Last but not least, you can get the cool and retro Alessandro/Grado for your portable headphone, adding in a Hippo case will totally make your Grado/Alessandro portable. A sweet spot that you can have is the Alessandro MS2i, or the SR325i. They are good for rock, fast music, and has good treble extension, punchy bass, involving, with very sweet mids.

I think a lot other people will have their suggestion here too cool.gif

Which is the best time to visit Jaben? Preferably when there aren't too busy because so I'm new and would need advice and perhaps some explaining as well so I suppose its only logical to come when they aren't swamped.

I'm trying to put together I guess you could say from scratch, a system that allows me to enjoy music. I used to be into DJing and messing aroud with FL Studio etc so although I have many headphones but they're brands like Allen & Heath Xone, AKG240s, etc and ALL my speakers are really studio monitors - KRK Rokit 5s, KRK VXT8s and Alesis M1 Active 620s. I've also got ICE setup in my cars but it's not an audiophile or SQ setup because I needed to a able to listen to music at high speeds so quality was not as important.

I want to be able to enjoy music and to be honest, I don't know where to begin. Right now my only decent headphones are MS-1 and I'm listening to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. But my music tastes vary and I listen to pretty much anything.

Previously, I've bought some audio equipment and custom cables, speaker stands etc from Tong Lee and although they are extremely friendly and accommodating, I now live closer to D'sara/PJ side and Jaben seems not only convenient but the type I'd be comfortable dealing with.

From what I gather, I need a DAC and some form of amplifier and headphones. I've asked around but no one seems to be serious because I cannot specify a budget but if I do not know what I need, I can't pluck a figure out of the air right?

But judging from the % thread of money spent, I notice that the even the more serious setups on these forums are not expensive so I have ti ask if this is due to DIY? I wouldn't be needing an advanced system and perhaps a fraction of what others pay is enough to make me happy. To begin with I doubt I'd appreciate the warmth of soundstage etc all of which I have no idea what they mean. I'd be hardpressed to be able to notice all the differences etc between all setups.

I actually would prefer to have PM'd Jaben directly but I'm not sure who is Jaben. Then who is yuheng and wallabies? Please let me know asap eith through the forums or plase call:

Really admire that you can write such a long passage.
As normally our store will have lesser people during 5~7/8pm, maybe you can opt to come that time.
As you are having a wide variety of music preference, and if your Alessandro serves you well, why don't you go for their upgrades with an suitable amp. It will go very far and you can be happy for quite a long time until your upgrade bug bites you again. Alessandro can be good for most of the genre except classical/orchestra, you don't listen to those right?
Jaben is originally founded in Singapore by Uncle Wilson, in Malaysia it is fully operated by Yuheng... and me.
Do you want us to call you or...?

walabies, actu what amp suit MS1 best? with budget around rm500?

MS1 matches quite well with the go-vibes Martini. It adds the warm of the music and makes the mid even sweeter.

Actually, in my post I did mention that I listening to some classical music at that exact moment but definitely not a die hard fan. Also listen to oldies like Ray Charles, Cat Stevens, Aretha. Depends on my mood really. Sometimes I feel like listening to Queen; who can resist Bohemian Rhapsody. Or if I'm working on something I'd listen to something like Alicia Keys or even Leona Lewis. I can't really pick a favorite genre only that 40% or so is electronic music and I'd want something with a bit more bass.

Hahah it sounds like I want a headphone that makes everything sound good even the Gotcha calls on HitzFM!  blush.gif

One more thing, given the fact that most of my music is on my computer would I need to upgrade my soundcard or would getting a DAC/AMP combo be enough. I do have an external Roland UA-4FX sound card but I've used it record mainly plus I'd have to actually find out where I put it. So let's assume no upgraded soundcard; is it worth doing first or later on?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the slow reply. Was on net yesterday night. Every headphone here will have their own strength and weakness. It won't have a headphone that is suitable for music. There are still limitations. By far the more all rounded ones will be the sennheiser symphonica mod, beyerdynamics dt880 with amp and alessandro grado with amp (but still not good for classical and orchestra type).
Headphones amp u still have to do matching in order to obtain a synergy with headphone u bought.
DAC yes, right, that's the thing u must not miss in ur upgrade chain. As well as the songs how u rip them. Is it lossless or mp3? That will be a huge differences. U will miss out a lot details if u weren't doing lossless.
The best way is u come to our store, bringing all ur music source here and test them here.

This maybe a naive question but I have some on CD and some on PC; the ones on PC are lossless but do I burn them onto a CD or onto external HDD or what? Also, the CDs aren't audiophile CDs because they don't seem to cater to my type of music I think. But they are original from store of course.
*
If you have lossless files, then it is more wise to use your computer as a source. More cost effective. Out there there are so many types of USB DAC that you can use. As for CD, you can get a good CDP, or rip them all in your PC to play.

QUOTE(egyprince @ Oct 15 2010, 10:39 AM)
How to rip to lossless file?
*
dbpoweramp is good, you gotta pay for it. Or use itunes for apple lossless.

Anyone tried Shure SRH840 vs Audio Technica ES7? ... tongue.gif
*
Yes. How do u want it to compare with? With which type of music?
They are very different sounding in overall but I would say es7 more "generally acceptable" sound to most of us.
