Where to get? I'm afraid that the selection available in Malaysia is... rather limited. Still sometimes even Speedy Videos can turn up something nice. >.<

I would like to suggest that you try learning more about musical terms-- after all one should know more about what you're listening to at the moment other than "it sounds good!"

Orchestras by definition are large instrumental ensembles-- they're not music bands, really. don't have names with D minor in them, what you're thinking of is the pieces they play e.g. Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

Famous orchestras: Berliner Philharmoniker, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Viennese Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, too many to list. Easier if you go by composer, conductor and/or soloists, actually. Some well known conducters are Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan and Kurt Masur.

Good orchestral CDs-- get ones from Electra Nonesuch, Telarc or Naxos, should have good recording. EMI have also got a lot of box sets; arg I WANTWANTWANT that 26 CD set of Rostropovich's complete recordings on their label... I have a 4 CD box set of the complete Beethoven String Quartets played by the Borodin String Quartet under the Virgin label that is very nice. There's also a 1975 recording of Beethoven's Ninth under the Philips Classics label that is beautiful. Oh, and if you ever see the CD set with Trevor Pinnock playing the complete harpsichord works of J.S. Bach, PLEASE let me know in a hurry because I've been wanting that for years. Also look for stuff by Yo-yo Ma, Jacqueline du Pre, Hilary Hahn, etc.

If you're into opera stuff-- Wagner's Ring cycle is fantastic, albeit seriously long. Mozart's Die Zauberflote is definitely worth a listen. Try out Bruckner and Mahler's symphonies as well as all the other better known composers.

Finally, go listen to these compositions LIVE and support our local music scene as well by going to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra's performances! Nothing really beats a live performance in a concert hall, and since the MPO has Sunday afternoon matinees with relatively cheap ticket prices (RM15 for students and RM20 at the cheapest price for Sunday afternoons) you have no excuse not to go if you're in the Klang Valley and love classical orchestral music.

ooh! thanks for the info! and i will go to MPO. went there couple of time actually. the music is great. that's why i want to buy orchestra cds.
been looking the cds for years but i cant find one. it's really hard. haih.and i will tell if u i found the CD u looking fro. smile.gif
thanks so much for the info!

Yes, I'm not surprised. I'm on a Dell laptop myself, and the onboard soundcard is CRAP and rife with noise-- bass just loses definition and impact, microdetails gone, highs not as crisp-- ahem. Anyway I once tried listening to Dream Theatre after using the DAC long term (didn't have the DAC with me at the time) and straightaway cannot tahan, music sounds rubbished all of a sudden.

A DAC is meant to replace your sound card and improves sound from laptops and computers in general, since it clears up noise and allows you to hear the details that are covered. With your budget I'd skip the E7 and go for either Go-Vibe or Ordnance. Ordnance and Go-Vibe DAC both sound highly similar, although I am not very familiar with the Go-Vibe's sound. The Ordnance is nice and responsive on fast songs but tends to sound a little thin in the mids and bass frequencies. Still it's fairly neutral to my ears. Not bad for RM240 budget DAC.

My Dell has the same problem... plenty of noise and the other problems. My HP netbook has a bloated bass and the recessed mids and the highs are just flat... i never go without my D2+ Boa

Dell Vostro 1400 user here.
Yeah, Dell is very noisy. The only thing I like on it is its speakers. Sounds a bit different from what you get with other laptops, not very harsh on the high end. Very wide sounding and good for movies. tongue.gif

High end not very sharp? Heh. Try listening to something with seriously high treble in it, and see if it doesn't start giving distortion after a while. At 54% my speaker grille buzzes. Given I listen to opera and choir involving quite a few high Cs and Fs, that sort of distortion is an instant deal breaker. Also, when pumping the speakers-- great volume but the distortion sucks. Mids also a bit recessed on my 1420, and overall to me the sound fromthe onboard speakers feels thin.

Isn't the ordnance dac discontinued? I remember yuheng said that and is very very similar to govibe USB dac he said.

So far I'm quite satisfied with my govibe dac.

Hadn't heard it was discontinued? Really? Ah well. Looks like I shall hang on to my current baby then. XD Next step in DAC from the Ordnance will be the Lavry for me!

I don't think it's meant for music anyway. For movies they do the job well. I found myself many times tricked by the speakers. There was a dog barking in a movie scene and I looked to my left looking for one, or a car passing by, quite fun for a stereo. laugh.gif Maybe the on-board sound card is good for one thing, driving its own speakers rather than mid to high end IEMs and headphones.

Sure, with music you can easily push the speakers to their limit. Thin bass, recessed mids and highs, they're all there, typical of a lappie speaker. I'm comparing them to other lappie speakers out there, these sound a bit warmer, and although can't tolerate much volume, at it's best they're not bad. Again, comparing to others. The ones from Acer is the suckiest of all, harsh from even a comfortable volume. I'm not sure if all Dell is the same. My Vostro laptop is from 2008, quite old actually. biggrin.gif

Mine is also from 2008. The very last run of Inspirons, I think. Haven't really tried with movies, since I hardly watch any, but maybe I'll try. Just that honestly even with watching movies, I find their SQ not very nice. They will do for very casual application though. And I've also been spoilt by listening to the ATP3 and C3 too much when I'm at home. biggrin.gif

Yeah. I've never dared go beyond 10% with my volume. laugh.gif
They do get very harsh. That's why I've been comfortable with them since my sound card volume is below 10%. They still have that radio-ey sound though.

Meh. SRS makes it sound more fake even on speakers. It sounds nice at first-- but for a short while only, after that cannot tahan and switch back to no enhancements.
