bro simpletraveller, what religion are you then? Tell me more on your understanding of Buddhism, why this religion did not managed to make you to be a Buddhist?
don't start here. he's famous n active in rwi area. he's famous for flamebaiting christians/muslims. even atheists there think he is a nutcase. best is just to ignore but ts must monitor the thread or it can easily derail from its obj.
Do you guys know what is the meaning of present moment?
allow me to expand a little bit on what others hv mentioned.
i find this sutta useful to explain not only the semantics of the 3 timeline n which we shud/shud not focus, but encompass 2 other important aspects to deepen the experience of 'present moment' 1. practice to build concentration 2. right view
p/s some afterthoughts. it also does not mean one must 'eradicate or reject' the thoughts of 'past' or 'future'. it is being non-judgemental, to practice (concentration) to see them 'as is', to understand/analyze the causality (of the past), n determination for wholesome changes of the 'future', verifiable thru' our own observation of 'present moment', re-adjust as we see fit to achieve our own goal, but minus the overwhelming tendencies for 'attachment' n for 'being'.
with metta

I initially find Buddhism very complex & very hard to understand. I bulk download article & sutta from AccessToInsight and I have re-read all of it 3 times...I still can't 100% understand what it mean..but after time passed I slowly understand what it mean without having to re-read it for the 4th times. I follow Theravada Buddhism the so-called basic & foundation to other strain of Buddhism. I hv to agree with you "Run of the mill person" will have difficulty understand Buddhism. Understanding Buddhism require "Wisdom" or in layman term require higher IQ & EQ.
But I have read story from Thailand where the people who do not have a strong understanding in Buddhism sometimes can easily go into deep Samadhi during meditation. Understanding Buddhism is not a pre-requisite to practice meditation and gain insight which is the core of Buddhism. During meditation just follow the monk instruction is enough.
If the Buddhist sect is heretic or the monk is a bad monk, then those who do not have an understanding Buddhism can be easily mislead into making bad deed...this is where sex/financial scandal arise.
the monks/sangha provides dhamma lesson as well. if buddhism is purely meditation, there is no need for buddha to spend his entire life explaining it in words.
just wish a rain should be a good start ... allow me to bring my Buddhist fren (imo they are Buddhist) danokchonger & Chrono-Trigger
Buddhist gurus: i appreaciate if you can help to convince him from budhist perspective ? thanks
there is no prayer in buddhism that can change the natural physical order, like wind that bring the haze to this region or rain to reduce haze, just like prayers cannot reset the order of the sun to rise in the west and set in the east.
it's like you assume everyone expects you not to eat infront of them during fasting, while only small % of them think that way, majority are still pretty open minded.
so if you say don't give those things, you are making assumptions on others, they might felt sad that you misunderstood them though they don't use leather goods, thus you giving something alternatives (that they might have less preference).
i don't know your religion, but i can see you ain't no Hindu/Buddhist. A true follower would try to understand the world, which includes other religions & their beliefs. At least for Hindu/Buddhist.
it all depends on how much you know of the recipients and their sensitivities as well as the sense of strength of your bonding with them.
but Buddhism also have a set of teaching, and i particularly referring to those that practice no beef/vegetarian followers, so there must have some sort of general consensus on usage of cow products right? maybe not 100%, but at least 80%?
it also teaches on the danger of how it can be taken into extreme views - good eg are the jains with respect to how they regulate their life around the extreme views of ahimsa. even one could argue that being vegans like them does not mean that in that situation, none of the worms are killed in the process, or animals killed/displaced when the plantations were set up, or farmers that need to toil also need nourishment to do hard work which necessitates them to kill/consume in order to do their work. so what is the best solution if you were to follow to the letter ? not eating or not exist ?
that is why buddhism emphasise middle path, being aware of your mind (mindfulness) and how this interacts with others and the physical world outside.
i am not aware of any meditation technique taught by the buddha that holds the breath, although the Buddha (before enlightenment) tried to hold his breath, to no success.
This is an excellent lecture on early buddhist text on mind mapping (psycho and physio analysis) which touches on how the interlink and interdependence of consciousness-organ-object works with feelings-perception-formations. and through this understanding, it provides a base through which one can observe and practice to experience these phenomenons ie through mindfulness/meditation practices.

this is bhikkhu bodhi perspective on the buddhism ideals surrounding the subjects of arahant, bodhisatva and buddha over the different sects. it is a conciliatory note over the schism of this particular subject.
no, but recently experienced someone replied me question instead of answer.
If that someone just tell you that your experience of piti is the first indication of what to come, without actually knowing what that is nor experiencing it, then you will not understand it.
look how a simple question derailed into philosophical puzzle.
when i eat cili padi, i can tell you it's a burning hot sensation on my tongue and followed by my brain experience momentary frenzy, after it's gone the craving for cili padi starts all over again until i perspire.
So, you seem articulate well with your thoughts, but why don't you (or anyone) tell me how it's really like when you achieve Enlightenment, if you really ever.
Piti is Pali word.... You can Wikipedia the meaning if you want.
Have you tried a reaper or habanero? How's that compared to the hotness of cili padi? We can debate of its shu unit but experiencing it is different.
As I said experiencing of piti is one of early indication of what is to come. And frankly I do not know what it feels like when I reach that final stage.
