Maybe he created dupe accounts - anyway if he is still in lurking in this forum, please PM me as i want to buy him lunch as i have promised.

I am 60 y.o. and won't create dupe accounts as i have better use of my time. Anyway some younger people might think it is fun but i am not here to judge.

Teamjoker - drop me a PM if you are still here.

Bro, not sure why my nick got like disabled or invisible status. I wrote to the helpdesk but no reply on why they do that. All my thread is gone. But it's ok. I have no attachment to the nick. Anyway i do have another same thread in USJ forum. Will PM you the link.
You are more experienced and I want to learn from you. I buy you lunch instead. I am already grateful to have you as a friend. Thank you for remembering me.

QUOTE(Garysydney @ Jan 22 2022, 01:49 PM)
Actually Buddhism has reduced my suffering a lot in life.

I used to be very arrogant and full of shit when young because my parents spoilt me (went International School in Singapore UWCSEA and later migrated to Sydney after doing my degree in Sydney Uni). Parents gave me whatever i wanted when young and also left me with quite a lot of inheritance (don't want to say too much now).

Read a book from Dalai Lama on 25 May 2000 and that book changed my life completely. Started off with a lot of interest in Tibetan Buddhism (Tibetan Buddhism is huge in Sydney) until Jan 2004 when i found Thai Buddhism much more to my personality. Went to a lot of meditation classes from 2004 to 2015 (used to meditate 8-9 hours a day seven days a week after learning meditation).

To cut a long story short, Buddhism has changed me for the better and taught me to be a more honest person. I used to love to wheel and deal when younger (especially in the sharemarket).
*
Quite similar experience I have in life. Until now don't have the patience to do meditation. I had let go many things but sometimes anger comes swiftly subconsciously. I still got a lot to learn.

QUOTE(empire @ Feb 25 2022, 02:18 AM)
My wish is to have a 3 days 2 nights kind of 'get away' from the hectic City life...to be among Buddhists where there is meditation....chantings...and eating 100% Vegetarian meals. Anyone knows where I can join this in Klang Valley?
*
I also wanted to do this but family commitment makes it difficult. If I got the freedom, I would go Thailand.

QUOTE(Garysydney @ Mar 1 2022, 11:37 AM)
Actually i have been following this thread but i have not posted anything about myself but now i think it is time i reveal more about my past 22 years following the Buddhist teachings. I don't usually want to talk much about my Buddhist faith because a lot of my friends are Christians and they think i am stupid being a Buddhist. My friends try to convert me to Christianity but i am a person who likes to question things and always ask why (which is why Buddhist teachings are best for me). I am not someone who will just follow blindly.

When i was younger, i was always wanted to get rich and did a lot of 'syndicate manipulation' of stock prices because i have a lot of friends in the stockbroking industry (in Aust). Now i am old and a lot wiser,i don't wish to be involved in any illegal activities. I have started to allocate a little of my portfolio to Msian shares (most of my funds are overseas). Let you have a peek of my small Msian portfolio.

Every sharing you doing now have a lot of merits. Because every audience that read and learn, some will change for the better. It's similar to Buddhist education just that different audience. These people once learn the right way and teach their kids, and the good spreads. The world now need more good, love from the heart.
That is why I always encourage good sharing.

Hello my young friend, i still haven't forgotten i owe you a lunch. Maybe when Covid cases drop more, i will meet up with you. My relatives (and friends) warn me against making friends with other people when in Msia but i think you should be okay. I will make contact with you at a later stage but i never forget promises that i make.

I don't like posting too much nowadays as i slowly begin to understand the mentality of forummers here - aiyoh people make up stories here and there. I am an old uncle who don't like writing nonsense so i want to stay a little quieter nowadays.

I am writing more in this Buddhist thread because it has benefit me greatly so that is why i am sharing with other people. Hopefully we can benefit together with sharing about our past experience.
*
We cannot make everyone happy. Even Buddha himself cannot please everyone. As long as you share with sincerity for the benefits of others, it's their affinity with Buddhism whether they accept or understand your sharing. We do our part and leave the rest to the universe or karma to harmonize the world.

There’s a saying, the Buddha does not preach to people who r not fated, disbeliever n unwilling ones

Buddha got the power to know his audience, I don't. So I just use my wisdom to share and hope that some of my sharing can trigger whatever Buddha roots a person has now or in the future.

I thought Buddha preaches 84000 methods and pure land is one of the method? I think not everyone have the karmic connection with Amitaba Buddha.

Western Pure Land practise is practised by almost every schools in East Asian Mahayana Buddhism.

Chaan schools n many others in China also practise Western Pure Land. Buddhism in Japan, especially Tendai school, include Western Pure Land practise as well. Tibetan Buddhism also practise Western Pure Land in its practises. Same in Vietnam.

This is because wisdom is the fruit of samadhi, and samadhi is the fruit of precepts. To achieve the perfect Wisdom of the Buddhas, it can only be attained when all the precepts are kept perfectly. Can we do it? Especially in the end of time?

One who does not fully purify the karmas, one will reap the fruit of these actions, and being reborn in the evil ways.

It is important to note in the text, is the ‘context’. The specific timing is the Ending Age of Dharma.

Hence, Buddhist traditions in China n Japan did not separate Chaan Samadhi from the practice of the Pure Land, as the vow of Amitabha guarantees the nullification of negative karmas accumulated by people who cannot fully maintain the precepts.

Thus, by accepting the Vow of Amitabha, the person without precepts in the End Age of Dharma is theoretically able to be reborn in Sukhavati instead of the evil paths where he was destined to go.

I join 3 different schools: Pure Land, Chaan n Vajrayana, the latter two have extensive Pure Land practises n rituals

Bro, can share knowledge of the right way to do the chanting? Example: mindful or mindless? Means just buta chant also can or mindful chant? I hear many stories don't really know which is the correct way. Thanks.

I haven't been to the wat in Wisemans Ferry but i have been to the temple in Leumeah (Campdelltown) a few times.

I mixed around with quite a few Unibuds guys in the early 80s - i was mixing with the Chung Ling group and most of them were staying around Arthur St and Botany St. At that time i was going out with a Kedah girl (Padang Serai). I remembered at that time the president of Unibuds was Dr. Lim?? (cannot remember now as it has been about 40 years ago). I went over  to Sydney in 1980 and lived there all these years until i came back to retire last year. I must say i have had a very good career in Sydney Uni - staff in Sydney were allowed to be seconded (in some cases a permanent secondment) to other departments. I have worked in Faculty of Economics, Graduate School of Business (MBA), Faculty of Medicine (last 12 years before i retired), Administration (HR and Finance) and ICT. As i was one of the longest serving member of staff (and done several different roles in the University), i was pretty much left to do what i wanted in the final 10 years of my career. Looking back i must say i have been very lucky to have worked there and i retired on a very good package - overall i must attribute my luck to being able to come across the Buddhist path (before i come upon the Buddhist teaching, i was suffering immensely with both a big ego and huge anger). Now i live very peacefully and i cannot wish for anything more in my life  smile.gif

I believe your past life good merits and 福报. Peaceful life.

Maybe he got enlightened become Silent Buddha and decided to follow Amitabha Buddha's way to help others? I remember reading even Guan Yin had her own pure land for those who chant her name.

Of cause, it would be happy and sad moment, using human emotion to justify, as Amitabha Buddha enter into Nirvana,
while Avalokiteshvara succeed and enlightenment with name 普光功德山王如来 and Pureland name change from
極樂世界 to 眾寶普集莊嚴世界
*
What does Nirvana actually means? Gone forever? His stage now not already achieved Nirvana? Why can't he continue to deliver his vows even after Nirvana?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 感恩

Objects are allowed in AIDING our practise, especially for lay practitioners. Without it, most ppl find it difficult to practise.

Visualisation in offering, worship is allowed, especially in Vajrayana way.

If the app HELPS to assist you to focus on Buddha, Bodhisattva for a minute, it is good. SOME people need it.

Upaya, or skillful means to fit certain situation is mentioned in the teachings. When in the the bus or train, practitioners would practise in their heart, no voice, no action. If an app is required for SOME people, also ok. But remember, in Buddhism any methods or techniques r just temporary, like a boat, once u reach the shore, u dont need the boat anymore.
No, local culture

Talking about drawing sticks, want to consult taikor, 2 days ago I follow a friend to Klang Kuan yin temple. He used this method 3 times but didn't get any sticks. They say max can try is 3 times only. What does it mean in this case? Thks

Most people are ignorant of regional cultures, are stubborn n not willing to hear opposite viewpoints. There’s no food grinder, blender, so things develop on their own n become normal practise. The Dalai Lama has always been playful, but not many ppl see the truth
*
With his experience in global Buddhism, he would be much wiser. But actually it's his heart or mind that matters. People like to criticize but if he is enlightened, he won't mind like the Buddha those day just keep quiet and smile.
Looking at people's point of view, I also think it's a mistake to do that in public despite your culture. Wise person will always be able to adapt to change. But this issue doesn't mean he is not a good guy or I am better than him. It's just a topic of conversation, no feelings towards him.
