10 days? That is fast!.. I am torn between a brand spanking new Golf 1.4 TSI or a used Mini Cooper S.. the Mini Cooper can be had anytime once loan is approved.

Mini is small but its cheeky look is so appealing and will never become out-dated. Wife prefers the Mini but being a second had car of course it does not come with 5 years warranty like the Golf! My only gripe of the Golf is the interior is so unexciting, the Mini interior on the other hand always makes me smile..

test drive both then you can decide. while the golf may not be as fun as the cooper, it is more liveable as a daily ride. plus it is brand new too.

Agree with you on that wink.gif

Personally I think the Mini has more character and I like the interior a lot. But the only one thing which made me go with the Golf is the fact that the Mini is 2 door and I am rather big sized so I am not comfortable sitting in a Mini. My friend also just gotten her new Mini Cooper S, drives like a dream and has loads of power as well.

It depends on what you want... Normal city driving or long distance?

I've a Mini Cooper (gf's one actually but I drive it most of the time... not the S version though) and
- it's not as comfy as the Golf
- the ride is rather stiff (even stiffer than my Alfa)
- get your wife to test drive the Mini first and see how she likes it driving on our M'sian roads and over speed bumps
- the steering is much heavier compared to the Golf
- overtaking trucks or getting overtaken by trucks can be quite scary cos you're in this little car (though not as small as the old Mini)
- used Mini (depending on which year), you may encounter the steering wheel problem where it fails and it becomes so hard/stiff that a girl won't be able to steer it at all (even I found it hard to turn left or right) and this failure can just happen like that.. imagine what would happen if you're driving and about to take a corner and the steering fails
- no iPod connector for the 2005 model that I have
- it's basically a 2-seater but can carry another 2 for emergencies (the 2 at the back will suffer)
- boot space fits 2 medium-sized bags
- the Mini though used will have better re-sale value compared to the Golf
- FC isn't that fantastic but it's ok
- the one I had doesn't come with rear parking sensors
- the main windscreen chips and cracks easily
- the driver side aircon vents are kinda blocked by the steering wheel.. well, good for those with sweaty hands.. hehe
- wind noise at 140km/h above but how often does one drive that fast right...? right??

btw, a new range of Minis will be out next year and it will have 4 doors!

azxel,

care to share the info for this new (4dr) mini? my, erm, someone likes the look of it, but given it's targetted market i honestly don't know much about mini, or its variant. anywhere i can know more about the specs sold here? both AP & imported.

sorry out of topic, tongue.gif

dude, thats why i am asking "can rocco ferry 5 people comfortably"

sigh, why some people have to respond so aggressively? i wasn't asking blanks. i can't test drive every single car in VW unless i want them to brand me "gao gao zhan mou pong chan". the 1.4 TSi was really good and close to what i was looking for, but just wondering how "less good" the 1.2 would be, if anyone here knows.

thx 1st.

You can test drive every single car in the showroom...I've test drove Rocco 2.0, GTI 2.0, Passat CC and Toureg V6. Been Invited to the lauching of golf GTI last year (the lauching event not like BMW F10 tongue.gif).
Dun worry dude, they are friendly and always welcome customer to test drive smile.gif
The SA call me n arrange test drive when there is there is a new model coming in Malaysia, just that i'm busy with my work.. rclxub.gif

Hi thanks for the detailed info of the Mini.., yup I have driven Mini Cooper S and I know the suspension is rather stiff (good for 'rempiting' though.. lol).
My wife also has driven a friend's Mini and she also complained of the stiff suspension and the heavy steering.

I will test drive the Golf 1.4 soon and lets see how it goes... probably I will go for the Golf as it has 5 years warranty... but wait until I test drive it first.. :-)

they might be friendly, but i would feel "malu" somewhat ma. What i intended was, short list a few models that i have more interest & then focus the test drive to only those few.

i guess i have a habit of "researching" stuffs i buy before i actually field test them.

No need feel malu man, its our right as a consumer to decide what we want to buy. Whether we perform loads of research or buy on impulse. Most of the time, they (the producers) want us to do the latter tongue.gif

maybe la, but that's just how i am. and of course, i agree with your last statement. too bad for them~ i am not an impulsive buyer, hahaha. i just wanted something for worth, since the family is already taken care of with comfortable main transports, so i wanted to look for something that's good as alternative for family carriage & same time good enough for solo performance.

cars like Golf TSI don't come by often. most car are either too family oriented (means boring to the driver) or overly harsh and tiring for the passenger.

btw, i have been digging into the new Jetta that will be based off the Golf. it looks promising.

came with the package. insisted my SA do it for me for free and i think VW is tied up with 3M. As FA also giving free tint from 3M. so far the looks and the quality is good. Also no problem watsoever using smarttag. My prev v-cool very susah... success rate using Smartag mayb 70%. so always gotta prepare to jam on the brakes in case the gate doesn't open. but so far this 3M tinting is quite reliable. 10/10 gate opens. summore i tint quite dark already ...

Yeah the invitation was extended to all members in the Volkswagen Golf Club Malaysia for the launch last night. If I am not wrong, the tuning package starts from RM6.3k onwards.

Found more details here about the various packages.

I hope that they manage to get an agreement with VW Malaysia so that with ABT tuning, the warranty won't be voided. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
