just tested the new Golf and here are my thoughts
Quite versatile. Powerfully fast enough when you need it to be, subtly slow when you want it to be. Step on the paddle and it hit 100-120km/h in a short burst! It really doesn't feel like a 1.4 engine.
Driving at 60km/h feels awfully slow and at 120km/h feels a bit slow. Gonna expect loads of speeding tickets with this car on the highway

Paddleshifts are nice and comfy. Gear change is ultra smooth (well, compared to my Mini Cooper and some of the BMW 3 series that I've driven). Its about 2k rpm at 100+ km/h on 7th gear.
Quiet and not so quiet. Signal Indicator hardly makes any noise. A bit of tyre-road noise, especially sitting at the back.
Front seats are quite ok. They're firm but not as fantastically comfortable as the leather ones found in a VW Beetle.
Rear seats are quite comfy (for short distance.. not sure for long distance) with adequate leg room if I was sitting in front and at the back (I'm about 180cm) but a bit of body roll. Sits 2 comfortably at the back but not 5.
Boot is a bit small but I guess it's ok.
Interior is nice (I like these subtle serious type of interior as well but as fantastic as what you'd find in an Alfa Romeo) but not as solid as a VW Beetle's soft touch dashboard.
Will wanna try the Polo later this month or early next month before I decide

if you're used to e36 and alfa 146, you'll this golf is refined. hehe

wah azxel, you tested the fiesta. the golf, both are double clutches. So what exactly are you looking at. The golf is a totally different level here and Polo and fiesta probably not side by side either. Cheapest is fiesta. then polo and then golf. this is also what i had in mind. but by stages. Fiesta first, get poison with double clutches. Then from polo 77kw 7 speed dsg to a whopping 1.4 golf 118kw. and ultimately the 155kw golf GTI. but by then im too old for a fast car like Golf GTI. Afraid that might end up in a passat or a peugeot 508
how old are you? golf gti owners are not young because by the time they can afford it they are usually at least 30. golfR with 260hp should be the ultimate. no idea bout kW units

lol... not sure what I want yet... that's why still looking around la.. for a replacement for next year
I like how the Fiesta looks but not really impressed by it's driving experience. I think that the Golf is way much better in terms of overall driving experience.
Gear changing and smoothness definitely much better on the Golf but as someone pointed out (think it was in the autoworld forum), 160k for a hatch is kinda steep so that's why I'm gonna test out a few more first

I also heard about the Fiesta's delay in car delivery.. they're pushing their nationwide launch from this month to next month as well...
We're never too old for these cars (not sure how old you are

). The Passat most certainly looks like a great car. It's another car that'll get you a lot of speeding fines on the highway. Problem is I like hatches or small 4-door cars but the gf already has a Mini so getting a proper sedan like a Passat, 508, Mondeo or 3 series would make sense.
In My Humble Opinion
Added on September 8, 2010, 9:55 amI think would wait a bit before deciding... not really an early adopter as I've had countless bad experience with a lot of 1st gen stuff I buy

Will want to check out and see what problems folks face as well...

well you have good taste in cars. keep it up. yes it's better to test drive the polo as well later

thank you for the motortrader link. really useful. seems the supercharger do the work in the lower revs, the turbo do the work in the higher revs
and the cruising rpm at 7th gear is really low.
that red(tornado red is it?) seems neat. better than the other red
climacool - seems you really want for TT huh? haha. you got mk5 huh?
