Hi, I'm thinking of getting an intel 320 40gb as my first ssd since its one of the cheapest (viewnet still have them listed) & reliable but I'm not sure whether its a good buy or not since its small capacity & some say its slower than others. How slow is it? I'm planning of using it for boot drive only and I want something faster than normal HDD.
See the technical specs of
Intel SSD 320 Series.
Smaller capacity means lesser NAND Flash which obviously reduce the speed.
The sweet spot would me 80GB-160GB.
Fortunately, it's going to be faster than HDD a lot even though it's the lowest end 320 Series SSD.
Regular HDD only has less than 100 IOPS while high performance HDD might have more than 100 IOPS.
SSDs are talking about thousands of IOPS. It might not be fast in sequential read/writes but it'll definitely boot up your machine significantly faster than regular hard drives.
However, 40GB for boot drive is sufficient if you don't use it for anything else but OS only.
