Aiyo...don't you think its a hassle everytime need to plug into your MBA? hmm.gif

In my opinion, 11.6 inch with 128GB is the best option. 64GB, even with moderate usage can be used up really easily, unless its really used for just surfing, emails etc.

If choosing the 11.6, my recommendation would be to go for the higher spec.

What I am wondering is, when the time comes, would it be possible to switch out the storage to say a 256GB assuming it becomes available, or are we permanently stuck with what the MBA comes with?

permanently stuck, exactly like how u're stuck with the the memory of n ipod/ipad/iphone

Thanks for the answer. Damn, a bit sad at that fact, but strengthens my opinion that 128GB is the better option.

it seems still some ppl against 64GB even we can pair it up with external HDD...
my laptop almost dead this evening and I thought I can buy a new one
but I dun have the guys to ask my parents to sponsor some money  laugh.gif
*
Yup I'm one of those. I believe in lean computing (put most stuff on external HDD), just that 64GB I feel is a bit low these days for basic computing. Unless you are very very diligent, applications and files can add up. Not to mention the OS itself eating up part of the storage. You end up always having to clean up and constantly monitor your usage, which can be a drag sometimes. Which is why I think 128GB paired with external HDD suits me nicely.

One thing we do have in common tho, my parents also not gonna sponsor me money lol

well...im gonna sell out the iPod Touch i won in a contest when shipped to me.... lets say i can self contribute around 800-1000 ...i still need 3000 to buy 128gb MBA or MBP ... but 64GB MBA require lesser money therefore mayb easier to convince my parents...

You won iPod Touch in a contest? Awesome!

Sounds like a good plan. Enjoy your MBA man. Need a plan for myself now heh heh.

MBW currently is not under my consideration...some1 might need to convince me...lolx
if 64gb mba problem can be solved by external hdd then im more than happy
*
I would still go for the MacBook Air over the MacBook White, such an awesome device and people will marvel at its thinness well until the next model comes out. You won't regret it.

I don't see problems with 64GB since you are aware of how you want to use it. Very usable when combined with external HDD.

1. One of the storage hogs will be iPhoto, so make sure your iPhoto library resides on the external HDD. Link below tells you how, although if you google it, there are plenty of threads on this:

http://basics4mac.com/article.php/move_iphoto_lib

2. Second, I think you are able to do the same with your music etc. You can keep your iTunes library on a hard drive as well.

erm..just now went to the apple premium reseller there..the guy told me if i buy MBA...next time when Lion come out...i wont be getting any upgrade if it comes from cd sad.gif

gotta spend money on optical drive ? T_T
*
Worst case maybe you can ask the guy at the reseller to install for you, since they have external CD Drives. They've upgraded my laptop OS for me before.

Also, for anything else, I think the Remote Disc function still works on the new MacBook Air. Basically, you can use another computer's CD Drive, over wifi. Pretty cool, I used it to install Microsoft Office on the old MacBook Air before.

im using a white macbook late september 2009.
having difficulty now in pressing the trackpad. doesnt seem to be responsive to clicking but tapping does work tho..
thanks in advance
*
Just to add to the trackpad issue, just in case it could save you a trip to the store.

The trackpad is designed by Apple to be easier to press closer to the bottom, and increasingly difficult near the top of the trackpad, near the keyboard. If this is the case with yours, then there's nothing wrong, it is designed that way.

Thank you for the replies, looks like I might be better off with a MBP though have to admit the display on the MBA is gorgeous! thumbup.gif  Steve said the MBA is the future of Macbooks, what are the likelihood of the MBP being upgraded next year without an optical drive? sweat.gif
*
Highy unlikely that MBP will be updated without optical drive. In my opinion, when Steve said MBA is the future of MacBooks, we was referring to the iPad-like characteristics, which may or may not include "Instant On", SSD drives, maybe going slimmer. Basically... the good stuff smile.gif

Of course, this is just my opinion. You never know with Apple, although if they do decide to lose the optical drive, I feel it won't be in the next generation.

Getting a Macbook Air 11", but I dun wanna spend on SuperDrive. Any idea if ordinary external optical drives work with it?
*
It is my understanding that most USB optical drives will work with the MacBook Air.

The only compatibility issue is the reverse, where with the SuperDrive will not work with other computers.

Looks can be deceiving. Need to remember the unibody construction while actually making the MacBooks thinner, also actually adds more strength.

Can't really verify which one is stronger, but to judge on looks alone would not be the best way in my opinion.

I tried that too. But it straight away direct me back to my XP. I cant go back to my Mac OS. sad.gif

Added on November 23, 2010, 11:37 amFree space left on my Mac OS is 252MB/97.8GB. I think the problem is there isnt enough space to start up my mac os but i dont know how to delete the files from my windows OS.
*
Not sure if you solved this yet, but just in case, this is worth a shot.

Your problem may not be related to how much space you have. If I am not mistaken, with Boot Camp, once you log on to Windows, it will log on to Windows automatically each time after that.

To boot into Mac OS, reboot your computer, and press the 'alt' or 'option' key. It should give you the option of booting into Mac or Windows.

Hope this helps.

p/s 252MB is too little space. As a general rule, try to have at least 10% of your hard drive empty, as it is sometimes used as virtual memory for the computer to run tasks. Having too little space left, can slow down your computer.

(I am not a tech expert, so correct me guys if I am wrong).

Hi, been a silent reader for a while now...
planning to get mba late 2010 but cant decide which is which...so ure input are highly appreciated...
im planning to get the 11 inch mba due to its 'sexyness' only...been a while since im looking for a small form factor notebook and then out of the blue...i found myself in an apple store looking at the macbook air...hehehe
so here's the thing...Im in a dilemma to pick which upgrade i wnna have...an extra 4gb ram or 128 ssd...i wanna have the extra ram cause im going to use this for another 2 years and hoping that it will be able to run engineering software (such as solidworks via bootcamp of course) and games in the coming years...oth ill need the extra hd space since that games and eng software tends to eat a lot of hd space...unfortunately i cant have both due to budget constraint...

any cents shared are highly appreciated....thx
*
Wow in your case, seriously the ideal model would be with BOTH 4GB RAM and 128GB hard drive. I know you said you need to choose between the two, but in this particular case I would really advise and you try to get both, as I can see you running into either performance hit, or storage limit almost immediately.

I really really love the MacBook Air, but in your particular case, if you really cannot get both options, I would (really really reluctantly) suggest getting a MacBook Pro instead.

p/s: By the way, yes, the MacBook Air is really sexy, and is an extremely valid reason to get the MBA, don't let anyone tell you otherwise lol.

get ram if u really need to utilize 4gb; & since it can't be upgraded..

the hdd u can use xternal drive to store all the files u need
*
This advice I agree with in general, unfortunately he mentioned he will be using Solidworks, which itself is a huge application. He also mentioned games. This unfortunately in my opinion places him in more of the 'heavy user' category, which I think must have both RAM and 128GB hard drive (even this is not much these days).

That's why I believe if he really cannot go the RAM and HD route, I believe he should maybe consider the MacBook Pro option, because the MBA is not upgrade friendly, and would be limiting his options.

Edit: Sorry didn't see your post saying it would be a second computer. Just want to add that I agree with iZuDeeN that no matter what, the RAM has priority over the extra HD space.

Guys... Where's place to buy a seagate momentus xt and a 2.5 casing for the it so that I can clone it with my current one? And also which software is recommended to clone hard disk?
Thanks in advance...
*
I think you can use Time Machine for what you want to do.

But if its cloning that you want to do, the one that I have used before is Carbon Copy Cloner, which is not bad. However, wait for some of the other guys here to give their answers as well, so that you can make a more informed decision.
