The family pack is just a licence thing, you still get only a single disk.
iWork'09 requires around 1.2GB disk space.

It really depends on what you are studying. If you're doing a non-tech subject, any old Mac will do. The entry level white MacBook will get you through just about anything, including programming / development. If you're ok with refurbished units, shop around for some deals. I got a MBP 13in for less than the price of a new MacBook white.
