i just bought my very first MacBook Pro 13" last night, spent close to 8 hours just fiddling with it.

coming from windows,it's a huge departure,IMO blush.gif

i'm unsure if it's been mentioned(searched, but no results appeared) but do check out
CODE
www.hiddenapp.com
it's a web based security app that helps you track a stolen Mac. it costs 20 USD,but until the 1st of January 2011,it's absolutely FOC.

so get it now before they start charging for the app again tongue.gif

i tried it last night, worked great.

im a little taken aback at the lack of software recommendations on the first post.
im not criticising or anything, but it would help mac noobs like myself if there was a list of recommended apps in the first post biggrin.gif

right now i've just installed the core basics sweat.gif vlc media player being one of them.

im still looking for a good downloader.
love IDM on windows, but unfortunately there's no mac alternative that i can find. sad.gif any recommendations? smile.gif

hiddenapp sounds great. maybe you can write us a short review? smile.gif
*
to write a proper review i'd have to wait til my mac gets stolen laugh.gif

ok,ok..scary thought.

but anyway, they have a test feature on the site and when i tried it, it took a few minutes to ping my laptop after which it took a picture of the user, and grabbed some network information-which i dont really care about tongue.gif

it's also supposed to grab screenshots of what the thief is currently doing, but i didnt wait around long enough for the system to grab that piece of info.

i just know it works as advertised-at the very least i will know what the thief looks like and could* take it to the cops.

*assuming they give a damn to begin with sleep.gif

there's a video demo on the site.check it out for the full set of features(demo)

i have to agree about the lack of easy-to-find software recommendations. you can just ask here if u want smile.gif for a download manager, the best IMO is speed download. if u're a firefox user, downthemall works great. as for me, im satisfied with chrome's built in downloader tongue.gif
*
so no one here uses safari,eh? tongue.gif

been looking around and it seems speed download is the most recommended of all.
if only they had a christmas promo like hiddenapp whistling.gif laugh.gif

Thanks for the hiddenapp.com tip. Looks good.
*
be sure to test the app out.
just login through a different computer and click on the test button.
it will take a few minutes to retrieve data from your MB.

just to be safe smile.gif

As for media players, VLC is good. Also look for Plex or Boxee.

Download managers, I mostly use jDownloader and iGetter. Don't really like Speed Download.

uTorrent for torrents.

If you're using Safari as your main browser, ClicktoPlugin and AdBlock are indispensable extensions. The former disables Flash and the latter blocks ads.

Also check out Fluid.

Other things I use, Dropbox, Evernote, 1Password, Growl, Mailplane, gfxCardstatus, Menumeters, Sizeup, LittleSnitch, Things, Facetime, etc...

thumbup.gif nice! thanks

I use Safari! Too used to it already so I'm not willing to switch to any other. And I love the Top Sites view. It's my default homepage and it makes typical bookmark bars look obsolete.

thumbup.gif same here

it checks for a 33mb update then tells me im not connected to the internet.wtf?

i've reinstalled it countless times but still the same result.

anyone have a solution?

i tried googling it but only came up with one solution that says to delete the valve folder in the user folder.
but problem is there's NO valve folder here doh.gif

the 1 Utama Mac City(i think that's the name?) had a "Mac discovery week" last week.
mac buyers walked away with a goodie bag containing a 320GB buffalo drive, mouse, software cd(trials only, though doh.gif doh.gif ),among other things.

no discounts..just the added goodie bag.

anyone using VLC media player?
i cant figure out how to lock the aspect ratio of my videos.
it keeps forcing the videos to play full screen(and i mean stretching the video to fulfill the entire screen) when i press the fullscreen button.

i want it to retain the aspect ratio and fill in the upper and lower parts of the screen with black bars-but cant.
tried clicking on "lock aspect ratio" but nothing happens doh.gif

a bug on the mac version of vlc media player?
it sucks seeing all the characters have their faces stretched doh.gif

Added on January 9, 2011, 7:37 pmchanged the "Movist" works great.
no more stretched image,so im just gonna assume it's a mac vlc bug

Download the VLC package from their website. There should be a 'delete preferences' script. Run that and then reinstall VLC.

tried that, still stretches.
