guys would like to  know few things on MAC system..
i've dled a VLC program which is
vlc-1.1.5.dmg

after download when i click on it it says opening... (does it need to install?)
& why is the file outside of my desktop? after i deleted @ the desktop how can i search for it? e.g.
like PC
i go to C:/program files/vlc

@ MAC where? can teach me? thanks
*
most mac apps doesnt need to be 'installed'. u just download a .dmg file, which is something like an .iso file. double clicking the dmg will mount a virtual volume, and inside that volume is the app u want to 'install'. just drag that app to the Applications folder (u can drag anywhere, but then better juz put every app in the application folder right?) and that's it smile.gif simple eh

next just eject the volume. it's up to u if u want to delete the .dmg file or not, u dont need it anymore

I was wondering. Can I restore a time machine back up to a new mac? Sister taking my current one and I'll be getting a new one.
*
yes you can. during the 1st time boot (if im not mistaken) there will be an option to restore from a time machine backup. just use that

Awesome. Also is there a way to format my machine for my sister to use?
*
insert the OSX dvd that came with the mac. restart, and press n hold C after the boot chime, until a grey apple logo appears (looks similar to how it'd normally boot, but this one will take quite a long time). then juz follow the instructions on how to install OSX

Hey guys,
I am going to buy a WD HDD for Time Machine backup and some other storage.
How can I organize the HDD so that I can still keep the WD SmartWare(thinking of make 2 partition)?
And, how much size should I reserve for Time Machine?
Will Time Machine remove old backups?
*
no need to make 2 partition. just format the hdd to mac os journales and that's it. it wont remove smartware. actually more people are asking how to remove smartware haha

also, u dun need to set a specific size for time machine. just plug in the time machine, and do ur 1st backup 1st. all ur backup files will be kept in a single folder. u can store ur other stuff on the drive as well, without formatting it. just dun disturb the backup folder

up until the point where ur hdd is full (backups + ur other stuff), then time machine will delete ur backups starting from the oldest one. so the bigger ur hdd, or less other files u store in it, the more backups ur time machine can hold

clear? tongue.gif also i'd recommend getting a drive with firewire800 for time machine. much faster speed

Hi all, I hope someone couldbhelp me for my problem here! sad.gif
Today all of the sudden my Mac hang when I was watching movie, it freeze and a black screen pop out, asking me to hold power button to shut down my Mac.

After that, my Mac become slow whenever I'm doing any click or whatsoever.
After a while it hang again, I did another force shut down.

Now even I want to press next song in my iTunes I also need to wait for a few second for it to action. My Mac is MacBook white late 2009 with 4 gb ram. Anyone can teach me what to do?
*
it's probably a kernel panic. did u get something like this? http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/8337/lolappxc8.png

it can be a lot of reasons but normally it's because of a faulty RAM. what u can do is, take out one 2gb n use ur computer normally, see if u still get the same problem. if no, then probably the RAM u took out is faulty. if yes, proceed:

put back the first 2gb u took out, and take out the other 2gb, then use ur computer again to check for kernel panics. if no, then the second RAM is probably faulty. if yes, either both RAMs are faulty or something else is giving u these problems

u can search for instructions to change ur RAM at ifixit.com

you sure?
time machine require at least exact capacity of your mac HDD or more
it's better to always keep Time Machine Drive at another partition

for my case, i got 1TB My Book Studio, 500Gb for my time machine backup
and another 500GB partition for other stuffs
*
oh ya i forgot about the bolded part

regarding the folder, yes, im sure no need to partition. that's how im using mine right now. im using the 1TB mybook studio too. only 1 partition, n i just put my stuff there. i dun see why keeping it at another partition would be beneficial in any way tongue.gif mind explaining?

well main thing is to isolate your time machine drive from other stuff

by your way, do you have another problem let's say
a new mac, can you transfer your file and folder from time machine partition?
*
time machine stuff is all in one folder. isolated enough for me tongue.gif

well i dont have a new mac. but i've just bought a new hdd and i just restore from my time machine. all went smooth

To all MBA gurus, one question here. Let's say bought the MBA 13 with default spec. Later would like to upgrade the ram to 4GB, will that be possible or we have to upgrade immediately when we purchased?
*
u probably cant fit a normal RAM stick in the already packed MBA anyway, that's why they have the RAM chips directly soldered to the motherboard. if u want 4gb, upgrade when purchasing. might take longer for ur unit to arrive lah

can always look for 2nd hand if u want it cheaper. since the MBA is still new, even the 2nd hand ones should be in a good condition

wow you people are really into your apple gadgets eh? you refer to your macbooks as macs, and reserve the word "laptop" for everything else tongue.gif. to me, keeping 2 laptops seems like a waste. it's like having a wife and a mistress...and i can't tell which is the wife and which is the mistress.

ok here's another question: does a macbook's value drop drastically after about a year (assuming everything is in pristine condition after a year)?
*
1st of all, congrats! haha well the thing is most of us here are previously windows users, n while we still use windows nowadays, we prefer OSX. since macs (as in any macs, not just macbooks) can run windows as well, seems like a no brainer ;p

aaaanyway everyone needs a computer today. if u say it's interfering ur social life, just stop playing games. u cant play most games in OSX so that shud be a good thing? hehe.

about ur value question, no. even the old ibook (before 2006) stil sells >rm800. current macbook, after 1 year, i think still can get more than 2k for it

conclusion: sell the acer, use the money to find chicks (yes its relevant), enjoy ur social life w/o having to worry about antivirus, defrags, n having to keep up with the latest games lol

i can hear people chanting "keep the mac, keep the mac, keep the mac"...and i'm starting to feel silly for posting my question in a mac thread biggrin.gif

ok, no harm asking 1 more time if it's been asked a million times already - can i use the mbp 13 to fry eggs while i watch youtube? i understand that it's an OS issue, so do you people use bootcamp to switch to windows before you go for a youtube marathon?
*
eh i dont think any macbook can fry eggs while watching youtube tongue.gif mine doesnt really heat up

thank bro for the info smile.gif
does spyware/adware harder to get with mac os? or only virus n worms?
*
u have a very2 small chance of getting virus/worms/spyware/adware/trojan

well at least no huge cases la. i remember maybe 3 years ago there was an OSX-specific trojan included with a cracked torrent of adobe CS4. but u still need to manually install the trojan. i think that was the most 'serious' case....which is not serious at all tongue.gif
