Hello people. I'm in the market for a laptop to complement my desktop pc at home. I'm still undecided between the MBA 11" or MBP.

To owners of the new MBA, can it handle the playback of 720p videos? icon_question.gif I've read people complaining(???) the 720p youtube video playback as jerky and unsatisfactory on macrumors.

Plus, is the screen on the MBP 13 better than MBA for viewing HD contents? hmm.gif

those complaints about 720p videos are more likely to be about the previous gen MBA. maybe u can try looking for reviews specifically on the current gen, or just ask those using it here smile.gif

MBA 13" will be better for HD viewing compared to MBP 13" due to more pixels. but 11" maybe a bit small for you. if i have a powerful desktop at home, i'll get an MBA w/o question icon_rolleyes.gif

@pearlyLPU
let's look at the figures. The current MBP 13" has a 1280x800 screen. On the MBA which has the same screen size, has 1440x900 pixels. That, is super crazy. As for viewing HD videos, the MBA has slightly higher latency than the MBP. I have compared playback of 1080p videos on both Macs and the difference is not that striking, in terms of latency. With that being said, i suggest you go for the MBP instead.

On another note, Steve did say that the new MBA will be the future of MacBooks. And having said so, i'd suggest you wait a little longer until the new MBP launches around April. Apple might be able to put in that gorgeous 1440x900 display on the new MBP 13". wink.gif

some people, rm7k is cheap. some people, rm4k is expensive.

that being said, even the cheapest macbook white should be up to most tasks u can throw at it. im using a 2008 MBP, which has slightly lower specs as the current macbook white (ignoring my dedicated GPU since i hardly use it), n upgraded to 4gb ram (i suggest u do that as well, should cost around rm350 only). it's running damn fine until now, so im sure the current macbook white will do too

it would be great if u could top up a bit for the basic MBP 13". the aluminium body feels much better. macbook white will look dirty after a while

It really depends on what you are studying. If you're doing a non-tech subject, any old Mac will do. The entry level white MacBook will get you through just about anything, including programming / development. If you're ok with refurbished units, shop around for some deals. I got a MBP 13in for less than the price of a new MacBook white.

@Edoras,
regarding the MagSafe connector, Apple designed it as such so that it's angled.
Why? It's learnt that most folks who use the old MagSafe tend to place their cables behind their MacBooks. Rather than having tons of cases where the connectors are frayed and torn off(which presents a safety hazard), Apple has decided to make it angular. Besides, if the cable is out of sight, you won't even notice it being there.. smile.gif It also has a more slim form factor as well.
*
Yes, it really makes sense to me now.
At first, I placed the magsafe facing down to my feet when I realized, why it blocked my USB! Haha... silly me.
Its safer now pointing to the back... smile.gif

Thank you for the replies, looks like I might be better off with a MBP though have to admit the display on the MBA is gorgeous! thumbup.gif Steve said the MBA is the future of Macbooks, what are the likelihood of the MBP being upgraded next year without an optical drive? sweat.gif

Lol sorry if I offended anyone or something. It's just that I'm planning to get one, but just clearing my doubts. Seeing that iPhone restricts so many things I wondered if it applies for other Apple items or not. But since its not the case, I think I'll be getting it next week. tongue.gif

i think it will still have an optical drive. if they want to remove it, im not sure what they can replace it with. another harddrive would kill battery life (unless they let u turn it on and off, which would be cool!). a spare battery will make the right side heavier than the left.

unless the next mbp is going to be a major revision, with a new look n new motherboard design n such. which i doubt tongue.gif

haha no la, it's just that i nvr see ppl think that way tongue.gif apple can do that with the iphone bcuz it's a brand new product they built from the ground up. macs are open for too long. even after the mac app store launches, i doubt that they will prevent you from installing apps outside of the app store. it'd make every mac user n developer furious!

Highy unlikely that MBP will be updated without optical drive. In my opinion, when Steve said MBA is the future of MacBooks, we was referring to the iPad-like characteristics, which may or may not include "Instant On", SSD drives, maybe going slimmer. Basically... the good stuff smile.gif

Of course, this is just my opinion. You never know with Apple, although if they do decide to lose the optical drive, I feel it won't be in the next generation.

If you're talking about making have no boot sound when it boots, then the only way I know how to do that is to mute the laptop before you shut down. The next time you boot it, it will be muted.
