Just finished Shi no Zouki yesterday. Great drama, as expected, WOWOW dramas are different. Always unexpected twists at the end. It was a great ride.

I love how they're able to capture the death of that woman so mysteriously beautiful. There's also a brief collaboration with Taiwan (didn't expect that but it's a nice addition and plays a huge role in the truth behind the death of the woman). Recommended  thumbup.gif

Where do find the Eng Subs for most of dramas?

Even D-Addicts sometimes do not have the subs for certain dramas.

I get them from d-addicts too. But yes, that's the sad truth...some dramas just don't get subbed (Shi no Zouki is not currently subbed). I depend a lot on d-addicts for the most part, but if there's no sub for the dramas I really like, I still end up watching without subs by relying on my japanese understanding. I'm currently self-learning the language so it helps one way or another.

I think there's advantage too if you know Mandarin because from what I observed, a lot of J-dramas get subbed in Chinese. Even WOWOW dramas sometimes have Chinese subs. (too bad I'm a banana Chinese, know how to listen/talk but not read sweat.gif ) WOWOW (private paid channel) dramas rarely get subbed in english because of the lack of Japanese subtitles, the channel doesn't provide subtitles like others do (FujiTV, Asahi, TBS etc)

For example here's the site for japanese subs:
http://jpsubbers.web44.net/Japanese-Subtitles/

Most subbing groups rely on these as reference to make english ones. Imo, since WOWOW don't provide them, their dramas are rarely subbed which is a huge waste because I actually prefer their dramas sometimes over the usual channels. Their shooting quality is just different, some are really like movie cinematography smile.gif
Anyways, I think Ishi no Mayu has a low chance of being subbed too but I'm still going to watch it laugh.gif

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another WOWOW drama - Enka Gold Rush which just finished this season. It's basically a black comedy smile.gif
That Osaka-ben is kinda tough to understand but still quite amusing.

Cast: Mirai Moriyama, Mitsuki Takahata

Synopsis
QUOTE
Kumagai (Mirai Moriyama) is an art teacher at a private female high school. Sakai (Bunchin Katsura), the school's chairman of the board, runs the school like the school is his own property and pays Kumagi a low salary. Then, Music Teacher Naoko (Mitsuki Takahata) and P.E. Teacher Oyamada (Hiroyuki Onoue) asks Kumagi to join them in a scheme to blackmail Sakai.

Unexpectedly, Sakai and his girlfriend Akemi (Yuri Nakamura) go missing. The duo are assumed to be kidnapped by Minowa (Houka Kinoshita) and Nakao (Yuichi Kimura) who are education consultants. Meanwhile, Kumagai and Naoko unwittingly become involved in a scheme to steal large amount of gold bars that were hidden by Sakai. source

Yeah, it's quite sad because some of the dramas are quite worth to watch.

Too bad that there are so few subs if compare to Korean dramas.

So what dramas are you guys currently watching???

Anyone watching Tantei no Tantei (Keiko Kitagawa)? If you're looking for a cool female detective kicking some ass and suspense, this might be a good pick. Personally, ep2-3 imho was slightly disappointing but I think it's starting to pick up pace with lesser loopholes.

If you're up for some family drama, then try 37.5°C no Namida. I mainly watch this for Renbutsu Misako. As far as the plot goes, I still think Mother Game is one of the best family dramas in recent years (alongside Kazokugari (very very dark drama), Woman, Mother etc).

Omotesando Koukou Gasshoubu! is quite nice if anyone's looking for some high school themed drama this season, it's the only one at the moment. It's basically about this group of students trying to revive their choir club again.

Ishi no Mayu ep 1 - GREAT PILOT rclxms.gif Trust me, that first minute is going to send chills down your spine. I nearly asked myself, what was I watching? Perfect opening I couldn't ask for anything better. The pacing is just right, suspense is throughout the show, and I absolutely loved the meeting scene where the criminal called the police. The way he provoked them biggrin.gif And it's creepy, the whole vibe. Needless to say, it's my favorite drama already this season. (I need HD version of this show!)

I watched the raw version (but low quality), it was released only on last Sunday night. But if you know chinese, it's already subbed at maplestage or pandora.tv. I'm actually already in the process of subbing this drama. Since nobody announced yet, I've decided to give it a try with help from my cousin who can read chinese. After I get hold of the proper HD raw version, I'll finalize the timing, quality check and release the english sub. smile.gif

If anyone's interested, I've just started subbing Ishi no Mayu (Stone's Cocoon). There will be 5 episodes.
Just visit here for the subtitle.
It's basically a suspense police drama.

Ishi no Mayu ep2 - What else can I say? This is obviously already my favorite drama of the season. It's not just because I have a bias towards cop shows but seriously, the whole pacing and events that unfold in this particular episode is worth applauding. Actually, I'd like to thank the director for making the whole thing feel like a horror suspense especially the hospital scene. SO INCREDIBLY GOOD. But Toko's rookie clumsiness might make you laugh because I did lol a bit in some parts. She's so friggin timid and it shows. Takano on the other hand is so cool and kakkoi! But damn, that 2nd victim...now we know what the criminal used that sledge hammer for. WOWOW did a nice job with the makeup. The OST is TOP NOTCH. I wish they actually sell the OST because I would so buy it. Overall, this is even better than ep1 which was already quite promising thumbup.gif

Some dramas to recommend for those who love mysteries, thriller and suspense.
Basically I find most WOWOW dramas above average and almost always a level higher in terms of quality production.

Yami no Bansosha (already subbed from ep1-3 at d-addicts, total 5 episodes)

I've watched it without subs once and loved it. I'm gonna watch it with subs again since there were details I might have missed before. But I recommend it to anyone who likes mystery and what makes this all the more interesting is the involvement of manga where they need to find clues in the unpublished 50-pages manga. The pair in the show, an ex-cop played by Matsushita Nao and manga expert Furuta Arata have such a great chemistry I really enjoy watching them interact. The pacing is fine, cliffhangers around ep3-4 were good.
Acting is also really good. I like how there's very little over-acting in wowow series, everything is toned down and feels more mature.
Rating: 8/10

Ishi no Mayu
Just finished airing last Sunday. Subs completed @d-addicts. Another WOWOW drama that is worth watching.

If we're talking about suspense, then this show's got it all. The search scenes and more gruesome ones, will definitely take your breath away and leave you at the edge of your seat. Excellent directing, amazing background music score and great cast. The criminal may be easy to predict and the lead character being a rookie may also not be everyone's cup of tea but I find this refreshing because we've seen a lot of strong and confident female cops in detective dramas and rarely a normal rookie. We also get to see how she grows throughout the case. So despite these few drawbacks, it's still very thrilling and worth trying. I'm even hoping for a sequel as I want this team back with another case.

From my observation, WOWOW dramas tend to be slow-burner and can take a while for the suspense to really kick in. Kageri Yuku Natsu was an example where the first few eps were kinda slow but the revelation at the end made it satisfying to watch. I'm watching True Detective Season1 at the moment and it reminded me of the style too, slow but engaging. No wonder someone told me before that the directing style for Japan's WOWOW is similar or equivalent to HBO's.

Summer 2015 impression so far:

Finished dramas:

Ishi no Mayu (WOWOW) - Obviously my favorite of the season. Despite the few drawbacks (quite predictable villain and viewers may be slightly annoyed by the rookie cop's actions especially in first few eps but give it some time), I still enjoyed all the suspense it managed to deliver and fitting background music score. The production value is quite high though I don't think WOWOW has more budget than the other channels but they definitely made full use of whatever they have. I want a sequel.

Tantei no Tantei (FujiTV) - If you want episodic thrills of detective vs detective cases with a strong female lead who will get physical in almost every episode, then this is for you. This show made me feel stupid whenever they use stuffs/tricks which I'm not entirely sure will actually work or not in real life but be prepared for some Sony product placements. In some ways, I appreciate all the explanations and you learn tricks but because it also felt slightly 'unrealistic' that I couldn't really take it very seriously. It's quite dark, not BORDER dark but quite nice to marathon.

37.5 no Namida (TBS) - Nothing truly impressive or special about this show to be honest. I came in thinking it might be similar to Mother Game but it didn't manage to captivate me as much. Still, I finished it just because I wanted to see why the lead character's family hate her so much and who she ends up with in the end.

Still need to finish:
Omotesando Koukou Gasshoubu
Napoleon no Mura
Death Note

Dropped:
Koinaka
Age Harrassment
Dokonjo Gaeru
Risk no Kamisama

As far as I know, nobody is subbing it. Expected since it's a wowow drama. I finished watching it and even though I generally can watch without subs (unless too many technical terms and jargon) the fact that this was slightly tougher to watch was because they used Kansai-ben (Osaka). After 1-2 eps, I started to get used to it but the experience will definitely be better with proper subs. Guess we'll just have to wait for someone kind to take it up. My impression of it - slightly draggy, would have worked better in 3-4 ep format instead of 5. Black comedy, acting is great and plot is okay. It's not really a must watch, there are better wowow dramas but I do like the way they filmed this show, I mean, the directing.
