A lot of us here know exactly how you feel. As I said to the TM tech who came over to replace mine a couple of weeks back, unless a more reliable router is found to replace the current DIR 615, they are going to be VERY busy
They will not find that router.. there is no
one router to fit everyone's needs. I set to work looking for alternatives since April because any idiot can see that users do not want to be locked onto and fully dependent on a single piece of equipment. They could have configured the BTUs to remove the need for VLAN tagging but they chose not to.. same sh*t with their SIP and IPTV system. It's riddled with security holes and it's only a matter of time before more people have access to Unifi and realize how to exploit them at the expense of other users.
What did they spend their time on instead? Locking us out of the IPTV network because using your own IPTV STB (windows media player) would result in you being able to view every single IPTV stream with them having less control over the content distribution.
They implemented so many different brands of Fiber ONTs that now the only uniform method of fixing everyone's problem with the DIR-615 has to be based on the protocols that are being used instead of a configuration option on the unit itself. Unless they start pushing out new BTUs or special firmware, the only viable solution to get your own router + IPTV working (like when you were back on ADSL services) is to use a VLAN capable switch in between.
I don't blame them for keeping a tight grip on their own service but every single security and network 'upgrade' they've performed so far has been so that they can get more money out of us. Has TM done
anything for the users? Every piece of information you see online about Unifi.. VLAN tag IDs, their infrastructure, router configurations, etc. has come from this forum and not TM.
