Kuala Lumpur, 25 October, 2010: Not to be written off following the loss of its South Korean and Japanese investors, U Mobile made a dramatic comeback with the announcement of its 42Mbps HSPA+ network here today,
starting from its cell site at the location of its head office at Berjaya Times Square.
“With this launch, U Mobile is Malaysia's first operator and among the first few worldwide to begin rollout of a commercial 42Mbps HSPA+ mobile network,” said U Mobile chief executive officer, Dr. Kaizad B. Herjee.
U Mobile claimed that its
HSPA+ network has under 50ms latency compared to under 100ms for regular HSPA and under 200ms for Wideband CDMA R99 3GPP standards.
Package prices will be announced about three weeks from now but U Mobile shops will begin taking orders from next week. The commercial rollout of its HSPA+ network in the Klang Valley will continue,
starting with the Subang Jaya and Sunway areas, followed by Penang and Johor by the end of the year and the roadmap of the rollout of this HSPA+ coverage will focus on densely populated urban areas on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the east coast, Sabah and Sarawak. However, its network won't all be HSPA+ enabled though subscribers can fall back on slower HSPA and UMTS speeds when outside HSPA+ coverage, while voice and SMS users will enjoy seamless roaming on partner 3G and 2G networks nationwide.
U Mobile expects its HSPA+ network to be ideal for watching streaming videos, playing interactive games and accessing other high-bandwidth content and applications.
Users will be provided with HSPA+ USB dongle-modems such as the Huawei E372 and from ZTE, though Kaizad expects most users to be stationary while using it and when used with the increasing number of third-party 3G WiFi access point/routers, it can be shared with all users within a homes and offices.
This same day, U Mobile launched its new U Prepaid service with a call rate of 9sen per half-minute to all networks, three times the longer top-up validity on their top-up amounts and a promotional offer of up to 15% bonus airtime and local call rates for calls to Singapore, China and the United States.
All the above is thanks in no small measure to Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT), a Singapore-based government linked company which had recently invested in U Mobile, and which is the major shareholder in Singapore's cellular and fixed broadband service provider, Starhub.
