usually when your RAM is >175MB, your phone will start to lag.. i experience this problem when the phone up-time is more than 3 days.. this is due to the high RAM consumption of HILDON- HOME and other accumulated temporary caches for the N900 dekstop.. but once i do a reboot, everything return to normal.. RAM back to normal( for mine is 150MB but it's depends).. try not to put too much widget on dekstop..it might help.. Oh yeah.. if your dekstop have simple FM tansmitter and Recaller widget.. please remove them asap.. they are reviewed by other N900 forum to eat too much RAM which are main culprit to lead lagging..
BTW, try check your SWAP MEMORY(use conky)..if you open too many application.. the swap memory will start to raise.. OC is one of the solution to solve lag problem.. recommended clock speed.. 125MHz to 800MHz..

If MMS is so important, then perhaps you should not get this phone?

N900 by default does not provide MMS support (not sure if Nokia will update the OS to provide it in future).

But there is 3rd party software which provide MMS support, it's called fMMS. But this app, seems doesn't use our MMS rate and will use our Data rate  (so it'll cost you a bomb to send MMS if you don't have Data Plan).
Actually the lag is caused by the use of Swap Memory... When you ram usage increase, so does your swap memory. If there is no swap memory, you most probably will not have these problems.
Not sure if there is way to limit the use of Swap Memory and clears it *properly*.

The non-proper way of clearing swap memory is by turn it off and turning it on. Yes, there is way to turn off the swap memory but it's may cause instability.

Another way to clear off swap memory is... same like your PC... RESTART...

I am considering to buy an N900, and I have read through all about this phone. But there is still something I need to find out before I buy it.

I am using a Nokia N73, and I don't have a 3G sim card. I am not going to upgrade my sim card to a 3G card, because I am not a heavy internet user, and I am not always on FB or msn.

I know some of you might think to use such a phone with a non 3G sim is something stupid, well may be I am. But I do need something like wifi and GPS.

Because I travel a lot, in m'sia and overseas, so GPS is quite a useful tool for me. And if I need internet, I can simply go to any wifi hotspot instead of using a telco's data plan. Specially when I'm oversea, msn saves a lot of money.

So, my questions are:

1) Since I am using a non 3G sim, but GPRS is available. If I use the wifi, will I get to switch to GPRS automatically? If so, that will cost a bomb in my bill. Is there a setting to stay on wifi without being switch to GPRS accidently?

2) GPS. Same concern as above. It is totally working on satelite or internet?

3) MMS. Some said the rate is as normal, but some said it will cost a bomb. Is it working the same way as my N73 now with GPRS or something more expensive if I don't have a data plan with my telco?

4) I checked at Nokia site. It stated that the new firmware now support potrait browsing. I prefer to have my phone UI in chinese, and I am doing a lot of chinese sms. Will I still be able to use the virtual keypad in potrait mode after I install the chinese software?

5) I am not going to install many apps and games in it, so, is the original speed of 600mHz will run smooth? Because I am not planning to overclock it.
