you can option to solo with henchman (AI controlled players like dungeon siege) or play as a group of party in guildwars.
The moment u leave a town/outpost, a local map will download to ur client and u wont see other players anymore unless those that stick to ur group. This is useful for lag control and eliminates the killerstealer and turbo looter crisis we all had in some of the mmogs. Just imagine playing a medival counterstrike that loads maps everytime the ur character exit town.
If A and B were inside the town and they are not in the party, if A leave the portal to outside town followed by B few secs later...A will load his/her own map and B will load his/her map. Both can continue their game themselves if in the event of disconnected, u will be teleported to the nearest town.
However, there are some very tough missions which requires group and teamwork to do well (e.g. the high level coop mission)...otherwise, u keep dying coz the AI henchman are quite hopeless (well not all the time) and they are always somewhat lower level that u.
That is why a guild that operates teh same timezone is very important in the game, so that one can find partners to compliment one and other.
