As long as your portable hdd is in FAT or FAT32 format with AVCHD file, then it is possible.

PS3 can't play MKV format directly from HDD.
First option is convert MKV to format which PS3 able to play and hard-encode subtitles into video. The video format which PS3 able to play can refer here. Second option is stream video from PC to PS3 using "Windows Media Player 11/12" or "PS3 Media Server" or "tversity" . Third option is author MKV into AVCHD/BD structure using "MultiAVCHD" and play video content from external HDD or thumbdrive |

I used PS3 media server.
stream MKV file from my PC through my PS3 and just place the SRT file in the same folder and it works Tried splitting large MKV to cater for FAT32 using swiss knife before... take too long and does not justify the effort. |

If your PC is powerful enough to transcode MKV to your PS3, then why not use the PC as your HTPC instead?
I tried PS3 Media Server and TVersity... both worked with my PS3... then I bought a G210 graphics card, installed MediaPortal and later XBMC.... never looked back ever since. |
