It's a good game, except it's a bit too easy and only one campaign.
Would love to have more. |

QUOTE(ik3da @ Jul 21 2010, 10:25 AM) Tried the offline practice for a while just now - the game play is not bad though as said, it seems quite easy so far. I was still figuring out to do the '1,1,1,1' code hack thing while my bots defended me until the terminal got bored of me and opened up automatically. Thought I was going to die for sure. Oh,that one.Just need to make sure all the "1"s are on the same level. |

QUOTE(ik3da @ Jul 21 2010, 10:44 AM) Haha, I was looking at the right screen as I click up and down - was wondering whether I need to make all "1" or make all four black squares to four white squares. Just curious too, anyone know how we get ammo for this game? I reloaded too often like L4D2 and wasted the clips. I find, you dont really have to reload often, as you could try to get the fast reload right when you are out of ammo. |

I dont see why Ice Frog cant make his own DotA wih Source Engine.
Black Cats have managed to get Alien Swarm out now. All Icefrog need is just a typical RTS control and it's almost good to go. |

QUOTE(Sewerspeakers @ Jul 21 2010, 08:31 PM) Skyboxes for Alien Swarm are placed below the map (the red/orange burning effect). Their maps also have a huge box that covers the whole map. Fukken hell, it's cool. Also I found this on Facepunch, someone already changed playermodels to awesome Space Marines. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Just replace: Medic with Apothecary Tech with Techmarine Heavy with typical space marine Sarge with Space Marine Sergent And,change all the monsters to Tyranids. I'll be damn happy. |

Why Alien Swarm is Free?
QUOTE Hopefully people will read why Alien Swarm is free, and quit with the endless threads asking the same thing, here you go SourceWhen many of us played Alien Swarm, we immediately thought "Why is such a good game being released for free?". If Valve had sold this for $5, it would have been more profitable, right? Nope. Valve really knew what it was doing when it released this game for free. And here are the reasons that they did it. The Game isn't a Full Game Currently, it only has one complete campaign that can be beat in an hour or two. Yes, it has plenty of replay value, but not enough to place a price-tag on it. Before Valve spends more resources on the game, they want to see that it is successful. It Builds Brand Loyalty Gamers like free stuff. Gamers also like good support. Releasing a game for free makes people love Valve (hell, it works for me). Valve also releases free content and support for past games, which leads to the same effect. It Encourages Modding (ie free content) This game is a modder's dream come true. It was created by a team of former modders that Valve hired. This gives current modders a sense of hope that their mods will be appreciated and picked up by Valve, which increases modder output. More modder output means more content for Valve games without any development cost for Valve. You can tell that Valve is counting on modders for Alien Swarm given the release of the SDK and the open nature of the game. And last, but definitely NOT least: It Showcases Steam to New Users This game is designed to be played with your friends. When I first discovered Alien Swarm, my initial reaction was to tell all of my bros how awesome this deal was. Many of those friends had never used Steam before. One friend had given up on Steam a few years back, and told me that this game was "A reason to go back to Steam again". This reaction is precisely what Valve wants. They want gamers to see all the new features that Steam has to offer for free. They want to show how easy it is to install a game using Steam. They hope that Alien Swarm players will browse the store and think "Damn, these are some good deals!". More Steam purchases=More money in Valve coffers. It's an awesome deal for everyone- Steam users get a free game and more friends to play games with, Modders have more tools to mod with, and Valve has more paying customers. And that, my friends, is why Alien Swarm has come to us free of charge. So, it's an experiment and promotional tool, but damn, it's addictive. Then, take more money from your pockets with more sales. Damn you, you sneaky Valve. Seriously, Alien Swarm > L4D2, with pubs. |

QUOTE(temptation1314 @ Jul 22 2010, 09:28 AM) Thats true, as what i think Valve is doing is good. They are exploiting the new user base, rather than exiting user base for more revenue. Alien Swarm is a promotional game to get more people on Steam. It's also for keeping the existing user base happy. I remembered Alien Swarm was a really popular UT2004 mod, which make it an even better promotional game than the free Portal game. I believe this is also an extension of what they have been doing for TF2 with those free maps, class and game mode updates. Valve have said that, every time they do an update or an offer, they actually earn more from their regular price. I think it will be a problem sooner or later, like the older games that you want, are either purchased when it's up on Steam or in those ridiculously cheap offers, those people who have been using Steam for 1 year or so have pretty nothing much to buy anymore. Then, the newer games are still too expensive like BFBC2 is still priced too high on Summer Sales. For some of us, the last Summer sales have been pretty meh. So, Valve gave everyone this small gift for those oldies to ask their friends who hate/ dont use/ never used Steam to play with them. Which in turn, making the new players a consistent users on Steam, and later on got poisoned to get those cheap games on offer. At the same time, people are still buying the games that majority of us have like crazy. Valve makes some money, the publishers like EA, Ubi and so on are also making money, then, we get more players injected into the existing games. Then, i think, now they are going to extent on what happen to Soldier's Equalizer (which was suggested from a PC Gamer journalist and a guy) and those community maps, items and Polycount Pack, to a point where community is going to build the game with free tools and source code given. Very intelligent, i would say, as we all know in almost every game, the community always outdo the developers in the long run. At the same time, Valve dont really have to do much on those new content in the game. I think, it's a win-win-win. Still, damn you, sneaky Valve. QUOTE(H@H@ @ Jul 22 2010, 09:55 AM) Nah, I don't think Valve were really being 100% angels in this regard. I believe its mostly situational. Im not saying they are 100% angels, as they are still driven by profit company. The way they do it, is much more ethical in my opinion, compared to some other companies. At least they keep you happy with free games. Its probably because, when they acquired Black Cat Games, the game was mostly finished, and then they realized that since its mostly a remake of the original (Which was free), was fairly short and for the most part was kind of in the same competitive field of L4D and other 4 player coop games, they probably wanted to rework the whole game using their standard "reiteration" procedure, but then decided not to waste all that work, so they went up to the Black Cat ppl and said "Hey, let's just mold this to fit our high standards and release it as a free game while you guys start on something completely new!". If you want to make them look bad: they are exploiting the modders to build their game, instead they making one themselves. |

QUOTE(Aeon_Clock @ Jul 22 2010, 11:56 AM) 7 levels only. It's a small game. QUOTE(Aeon_Clock @ Jul 22 2010, 01:06 PM) Well, you technically level up at the end of each level, and each level only last for 10 minutes. It's quick and straight to the point type of game. Added on July 22, 2010, 1:28 pm QUOTE(H@H@ @ Jul 22 2010, 10:03 AM) Modders? They were actually planning to make a feature release of Alien Swarm: Source. I was looking forward to it a lot and then they went silent for almost 2 years (Even their forum was a deadzone... It was like the devs literally died or something). If it comes with 5 different campaigns, plus a random generated levels, i'll probably get it even for 19.99USD.I assumed it would be a whole new game. But since its basically just a remake of the original, I suppose I would never have bought it if they charged anything more than USD 10. Therefore, I assume that Valve are making this free because it wouldn't work so much if they charged money for it and since all the work was already done, might as well just release it for free. The game is quite decent, except it's lack of content. We'll probably see a whole new game some time down the road with even more fun stuff. QUOTE(CyberSundayz @ Jul 22 2010, 10:28 PM) You have to find Steam groups that host servers like e-Club.I find the old server browser in TF2, CS:S was much better. You can access it in the console. This post has been edited by Cheesenium: Jul 22 2010, 10:47 PM |
