Referring to the title above, I need some advise because my information on PS3 is very limited and although google is a good tool, I believe I can learn a lot more from PS3 owners.

Recently I went to shops at BJ(it's in Penang and I'm a Penangnite) selling PS3 slims. The price is about RM1040 to 1100. These shops told me that they only provide the PS3 and only one controller. However, there is also one shop at the 2nd floor which offers it at Rm1300 with PS3+ 2 controllers.

Thing is though, before I went ahead and get one, I noticed some post in the forum about different PS3 models. That's where I start to feel insecure. To keep it short, I listed a few questions:

1) Is the price a good bargain in Penang? (the Rm1040 to Rm1100)
2) Are there different kinds of controllers for the PS3?
3) There is only one standard model for the PS3 slim, or am I wrong?
4) What games you would recc me? I could only think Killzone 2 and GOW3 as must buy titles. The rest pretty much in the gray zone to me.
5) As a new owner, are there some things that I should be paying attention when handling the PS3?

Thanks in advance for any good advise I could obtain. I'm terribly sorry if I made a new thread just for this

1) yes, for sg set. note that warranty is from sg. a malaysian set would cost rm1299 - warranty from malaysia
2) yes, but just stick to the standard ones as intro
3) for the price u getting, only 1 standard model. there r revisions of the same model, but to a user it don't matter much.
4) games is up 2 u. nobody can tell u what u don't like and like
5) nothing much. just handle like any other electronic gadgets. with care.

I assume the shop your talking about is Gametech. They give pretty decent price for the console.
You can also nego with them to give you the best price. RM1040 is a good bargain. If you want additional controller
better buy from PBBSELLER, it's around RM165, so do the math... smile.gif

Shouldn't you know all those before you are keen on a PS3? sweat.gif

Be a more alert/informed consumer, that's pretty standard.

Answer 1: I believe it's a good bargain. Thou you furnished us with the pricing for a PS3 Slim, what about the capacity that you are looking for? 120GB HDD? 250GB HDD? Please check the latest model number at the back of the PS3 system. It gives a handy information about the PS3 system.

Answer 2:
I've heard there's imitations in the market. However, one should not be mistaken for third party and imitation goods. I can see through physically with the PS2 Dual Shock controller but not for PS3 Dual Shock 3 wireless controller.

Answer 3:
There's a few variation in SKUs for PS3 systems. Mine is the original 80GB PS3 system and it falls under the 80GB SKU range. Anyway, there's hearsay that there will be an inclusion of a HDMI cable with a game tied in for future releases. I'm not sure if it's going to be included in the 2010 release but you can have a look around.

Answer 4:
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is highly recommended. Valkrie Chronicles is another choice. However, you should find the game genre that you really want to play.

Answer 5:
I believe material handling with care is sufficient. If you are talking about ejecting the Blu-ray game disc, keep an eye on the HDD activity LED and press accordingly. This has been shared many times before and I don't want to waste time explaining it yet again. If things get ugly, press and hold the Power button on the front of the PS3 for about 10 seconds to force the system to shutdown (safely). Use this method if your PS3 freezes/crashes (I've encountered once while playing 3D DOT GAME HEROES). Do not flick the power switch on the back of the unit to shutdown because it could potentially corrupt your files.

Regards, Joey

On games, below are my favourite tongue.gif

MGS4 - a must buy if you are MGS fan, even if there are more cutscenes than gameplay sweat.gif

GOWIII - if you are GOW fan ;p

Yakuza 3 - Shenmue style gameplay but with more badass characters, storyline and fighting mechanic.

Heavy Rain - interactive movie-type game

Fallout 3 GOTY - fps RPG

Tekken 6/SSFIV - take your pick

Thanks for the input. I plan to get one at the end of the month sweat.gif. All of the unit I asked are 120gb but as for warranty, I better ask them when I go shopping next time.

Think everyone has more or less replied your post...

I'd like to add in the following:

Check the controller, what type is it? If it's the normal one then you should buy or exchange (top up) for one with Dual Shock instead of the normal ones.

As for games, you gotta first know what's your forte? What kind of games do you prefer? RPGs? FPS? Action Adventure? Puzzles? From there you can basically tell what games to get.

As a new owner... ask yourself
- Do you have a LCD TV?
- If you do, do you want to use a HDMI cable? (not sure if the PS3 slim comes with that or not but the phat ones do not)
- Do you want 5.1 sound?
- What's your Sound System Setup if you want 5.1 sound and how are you gonna connect to it?
- If you don't want 5.1 sound and getting sound from the TV is ok now, do you think you'd be satisfied with it?
- Playing alone or with friends? Most of the time you'd find yourself using the PS3 alone so buying additional controllers isn't necessary.
- Wired LAN or wireless connection for your PS3 to the Internet?

Would like to add abit;
a) Before you purchase a PS3 make very sure that you own an LCD TV that comes with HDMI input. Size does not matter, 32" is more than enough. I bought the slim version on 15/3/2010 and they DO NOT supply HDMI cable. Be alert as well, there are various quality on the cable. You can get as cheapest as RM15 but they won't perform as well as Sony's RM290 (if I'm not mistaken), and Sony's HDMI won't perform as best as Monster's HDMI which would cost you RM1000++ (truly for HD freaks).

b)PS3 consoles are not just a typical gaming console, I would say a media center itself. Instead of just getting a blu-ray player, this is an alternative. You can surf the net, open the YouTube, Facebook, online newspaper, etc., a USB keyboard is working with it.

c) If you are FPS gamers, you might want to consider its gaming mouse, the FragNStein. Of course it's wireless. I do not know how much it will cost in Malaysia as I only play FPS on PC blush.gif

If you check the PS3 faq in this forum, you should know that Rm35 HDMI cable is no different than RM200++ cable.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlaySta...6652869#M828972

So, just purchase those around RM30++ HDMI cable. No need to spend on extra expensive cable.

Great finding Mr LSD!!! rclxms.gif Thanks for correcting me, but I wonder what makes these cables have broad range of prices...is it just to have a brand? Any infos on the HD quality degradation over time?

I don't think you can find such info, as there won't be degradation over time, either it works or it doesn't.

let me use my logic on hdmi cables. korek me if i am wrong. hdmi cables is totally digital as in no translation is done from/to analog signals. therefore
1. if u send say a bit stream "10010001" and receive "10010001" on the tv there is no degradation.
2. if u send "10010001" and receive "00000000" then u won't see anything.
3. if u send "10010001" and receive "11000110" isn't that degradation? u mean the 3rd scneario isn't possible even on the cheapest hdmi cable? why not?

Yeah, well said bro! rclxms.gif Here is a link that I have read, it says that the degradation occurs if the cable is more than 3 metres long. http://stuff.tv/forums/thread/33821.aspx

nobody actually really answered my 3rd scenario. so the 3rd scenario cannot happen? why? is it because the HDMI standard comes with checksum validation so if the signal receive at the tv doesn't conform to the checksum than it won't display. that's d only explanation i find logical for this statement: "digital signals cannot and will not degrade"

I bought a RM100 cable because it looked really nice.. it's wires aren't those 'round' type but flat and thin one.. which kinda looks sweet and it was gold plated. I have another RM50 which looks like those normal black ones with silver head. hehe...

you actually have answered your own question. there is a checksum validation when receiving.
unlike analog cables which is 1 way communication, HDMI actually is 2 ways communication. that is how they can implement HDCP into HDMI (which makes thing more complicated). so yeah, it either work or doesn't work, there's no degradation.

to those that still believe that expensive HDMI cables gives better picture quality, read what CNet editorial guide of such cables:
HDMI and HDMI cables
