Since I will be re-doing the wiring at my house, the contractor asked me to mark out the spots where I want my lights to be. Currently, the house is using flourescent lights, and I plan to switch to downlights (those embedded into the flat plaster ceiling - i do not plan to do those L Box and stuff like that, just a plain flat plaster ceiling).

I read somewhere that the rule of thumb is to have the lights 1m apart from the wall & about 1.5m - 2m apart for each light. Is there any truth to that?

Also, any recomendation on what lights to use/not to use?

I have a high ceiling living room that goes up to the 2nd floor (those who have seen the 1.5 story USJ house would know what I mean). Instead of using chandeliers, is there an alternative to iluminate my living room? Suggestions/share of experiences are very much welcome!

Many thanks in advance! smile.gif

if u dunwan chandelier, juz put downlight with bigger watt bulbs.

then can consider to put soft/warm light by install wall light or floor light.

btw, juz my 2 cents idea..

does having higher watts affect the plaster ceiling board?

Yea I fully agree with morpheuzneo. except my scenario is insufficient lightings! End of the day, it depends on your personal preference..do you like your house bright or dim cosy type? Personally, I prefer bright environment as I read a lot.. At my new place which I've just renovated, my contractor recommended to have only 8 downlights in my living room which I find it insufficient  (18W energy saving bulbs with frosted glass cover). So I changed the bulbs the the 24W type instead of changing the downlight to 2 bulbs housing type...
*
what's the built up of your living room if you dont mind sharing. im considering using the dimmin control as recommended by some website. so you can create an bright or dimmer environment as you like.

if you read alot, its best to use a lamp or a floor light. better for your eyes too! smile.gif

went light shoppin this weekend, so many choices of lights, even for downlights - there's the square & circle ones, with one bulb or two...gosh.....

anyways, one of the sales person suggested that i use something like this for my high ceiling...

wonder if it will look ok with really long wires dangling from two stories high? hmmmm

yup for your downlight maybe you also can link it using the 'IC' box..e.g using the same 1 switch..on 1st..light A on..then again using the same switch other light on or both row on...walaaaaa...

chk the detail on the bulb itself..ado china mali lor..

also what theme u want it to b...cozy or bright....some color bulb makes your wall color dull... blush.gif

plus chk the type of the bulb...screw or plc....spiral or u type....

chk wther your DB board can cope with amount of the lights if all on...takut trip or fire hazard..

chk the wiring also using the 2.0mm ?...takut they curi curi using the thin 1... yawn.gif

you can have the dimmer energy saving but all comes to the budget lor... cry.gif

or you can also option using the remote light control...e.g 'TOMATO' remote control...so wisely plan your wiring...like most lighting shop do..but makes you a 'Potato Coach'..hehehe...
*
wow. ok, there's a long checklist of things i need to be weary of... thanks ya!~ smile.gif will keep that in mind when i go light shoppin again...

btw, jus to share, i went to Old Klang Road & notice that they price is wayyyy cheaper than the one i check in SS2 ytd... but in terms of quality wise, im am not so sure. however, for the hanging pendant light (similiar to the photo attached earlier), the one in SS2 "workmanship" more "fine".... maybe i will get the downlights from OKR & the hanging lights from ss2 wink.gif

Added on July 11, 2010, 10:32 pmbtw- i have two conflicting opinions from two diff light vendors. some say use the one with choker - longer life span for the bulb. another one mention that no diff usin choker or non-choker, in fact choker more costly & inconvinient to maintain for homes..

anyone to share their experience? wink.gif

Potato Coach - kebuncitan yg meningkat like me lor...

yes..choke better ..but..all depends on u ler..plus it your d/light have glass then chances to burn more..as heat....

chk price at Avalon also...mind me not sales man avalon but some places can get cheap if u do survey...anyway i'm in melaka...so being scout around gila babe...good luck in your survey...

Added on July 12, 2010, 1:25 pmso 1stly..you ned to determine the theme or purpose of your lighting..

then total lights needed or 'LUMEN'..then size or type

Can it be done ..Your DB can carry or not..better print picture and plot the size or the area..

then Survey time...if not wasting time n RM$ ajer....
*
my hse kecik aje, & im gettin a new DB, so i think it can carry....

i takda theme for lighting la - as simple as "as long as boleh nampak, ok edi" wink.gif

Added on July 12, 2010, 1:45 pmbtw, this is the price i got from a few shops (on average) on square downlight

ss2 - RM30 (for 2 bulbs, excl bulbs. this is w choker)

is pin type and screw type energy saver bulb both got choker? i'm planning to use 6" square downlight for my living hall size around 16 feet x 13 feet (use 8pcs square) will need 2 bulbs or 1 already enough?
*
i have the same question with you. some salesperson say 1 is enough, another say two.

but to be safer, if u sked, then go for two, bcoz if its too bright, u can remove one bulb...

but if u go for one, u cant add another.....

wow 8 pc too much lor...too bright...myb 6 enough...plus when do wiring ..do section 'on' by section..

if on not all light will on at 1 time...so better control of it...mine using 6" but - 1 bulb...4 unit only but i have 'L' box with T5 in it...section on - a) at sofa..b) at TV cabinate...make it cozy it needed plus 1 show downlight that have 360' degree turning just to have the centre piece light shown....area 17ft X 14ft...wall color near magnolia color..JOTUN....using the remote control..

Added on July 12, 2010, 8:07 pmor maybe you can post your ceiling pic...for better advise...your downlight have glass?...with frosted or clear glass?...what is height of your ceiling?...

Added on July 12, 2010, 8:08 pmplus yours is slim or the cone type?

does it make a difference the thickness of the wiring that you use? will it help if you use a thicker wire for those kind of electrical items?
