From what I understand, it's like this!!! When Cobb told Ariadne to "wake up" using the shock created, he refused to follow because he wanted to look for Saito at that level 3!!! If Saito dies, they won't be able to survive also...
And so, Cobb managed to find Saito (the old guy in the YAKUZA-ish backgroud room =.=)... Maybe Saito shot him or maybe not~~ If Saito really did shot him, it'll probably mean that he'll "wake up" like the others riding the shock (the van crashing into the water, the impact of the lift falling down, the detonation of the base)!!! If not... trapped in a dream world maybe?? but I don't know which level though...
