I'm not sure whether this topic appeared here before or not so I'll just try my luck.

I'm thinking of getting an Insurance Agent license but I dunno the procedure. So I think maybe I can get some answers from all the professionals here. Actually I have a few questions on being an Insurance Agent. Please provide any advice which you think its relevant.

1) What is the procedure to become an Insurance Agent?
2) How many companies an Insurance Agent sign with?
3) What is the commission rate?
4) What is General Insurance and Life Insurance? Can I sit for both or either one only?
5) Which insurance company is best for it's policies and claiming?

Thanks for spending time answering my questions.
*Sorry for my poor English. tongue.gif

2) no need. just purchase the book and self study. my friend lend me the book, i heard that the book cost around RM30.
3) i think i'm gonna join my friend's insurance company. all the way she help me a lot, help me register exam in MII KL, provide study material and fetch me to exam smile.gif

well, she's my senior since secondary school ma... tongue.gif
my friend's dad has a quite well known insurance agency in Ipoh, which will provide training to the newbie like me, to study the products, guide how to explain to customer.. etc.. hehe... wait her to explain in details to me

4) When u study for ur license u will find out the difference tongue.gif
basically, life insurance is anything to do with medical and mortality of a human being. everything else is general insurance. (ie: ur possessions)
yes. can sit for both at the same time.

5) choose a reputable, strong company and a great agency leader (GSM) with track-record of at least few years of MDRT. icon_rolleyes.gif

I can sit all the exams at the same time? I thought can only sit like pairs? ie. A+B or A+C?
If can take A,B and C at the same time then no need sit for A twice? Nice...rclxms.gif

Yes not restriction. You can sit for all exam. Bear in mind that sometimes exam time do clash. Although this was a thing of the pass, who know with monkeys on the job it could happen again. But that should not be your worry.

Yes, the booklet they sell is good enough. If you dont want to buy it then there is a better way. Read policies for all classes of insurance. If you can understand every provisio, then you will sure pass. If you see a loophole in any of the provision, then you are better off being an adjuster.

I suggest you join financial planning company rather than join insurance company...In fp, you can provide products from different companies like prudential, AIA etc...and financial planners can compare the products and provide the best to their customers...while for insurance agents, they can only provide products from their own company...

NO, you are free to do what you want. There is an expire date to the exam. You cant join an insurance firm after the expiry date of the exam. My infomation may be out dated. As I know it the exam is valid for 2 years.

wow this is great, llJasell.

In my own opinion (and I am in Insurance) it's the team factor that made me choose the agency I joined. The product, honestly, it's about the same with each different company.
To summarize = protection and savings (LI) Protection (GI)

In LI, if you want higher savings it's lesser protection and vice versa. in GI it's just protecting the item for the just in case it gets damaged and how fast and how less hassle it is to get back the monies lost.

to answer your questions: -
1) What is the procedure to become an Insurance Agent?
~ u know already. Take the exam yourself or via ur choice agency.
2) How many companies an Insurance Agent sign with?
~ LI = ONE! GI = i think it was 3
3) What is the commission rate?
~ GI average 3-5%, (1 time only) LI got 2 difference, Ordinary Life insurance 35%, Investment link insurance 25% (6 years reducing commission which totals up 105%)
4) What is General Insurance and Life Insurance? Can I sit for both or either one only?
~ u know the answer already. I m choose to focus only on Life Insurance. Lesser headache and distractions.
5) Which insurance company is best for it's policies and claiming?
~ hahaha all insurance companies are following Bank Negara Ruling, hence average 2-4 weeks claims out d in LI. in GI hahah wait la...cos need an adjuster or surveyor to ascertain the loss and submit an investigation report b4 the claims department look through it and pay, experience about 1-6 month or even more depending on the case.

I'm attached with GMA, Manulife Life Insurance in KL. IF you would like to know more do PM me. I'd be glad to help out.

3) What is the commission rate?
~ GI average 3-5%, (1 time only)
General, depend on the products, from 10%-25%,
renewal basic, mean as long as your clients pay the premium yearly, you got the commission yearly
Example, premium for personal accident, yearly premium is rm200, commission with be RM 50,
mean every year you will get RM 50 as long as he/ she pay the premium
LI got 2 difference, Ordinary Life insurance 35%, Investment link insurance 25% (6 years reducing commission which totals up 105%)

I like wat u say. There are a few ways to look at it.

1. ur fren sees u as a great potential
2. ur fren wanna share with u a way to be financially free
3. it's a good thing n there's nothing wrong with it

I'm a Unit Manager with Manulife and I am creating my own agency. which means I need a team of agents. ur fren may just be in the same situation seeking a team to work with.

u know ur fren better then any1 of us ere on this forum. do u trust this fren, yes? try it out biggrin.gif

I would much like to recruit u also if i m able. yet i won't as i m not any other agent out there. u know wat u want n will only do wat u want to. wat i would suggest is to go n hear ur fren out. c if it really is something that u can do, aka help ppl. den give it a try...1 month? 3 months? 6 months?

set time line/check point and judge for urself biggrin.gif it's a great industry to be in s u r helping ppl in their lives biggrin.gif

If your BFF chose not to be friends with you because you are an insurance agent now, then one might want to ponder whether he/she is really your BFF.

But yes, I do know what you mean. When I started this business, some of my neighbors whom were really close (to the point that we share weekends dinner) to us started to drift apart.

I guess that's when you really know whether you had befriended the real person whom care for you for what you are or how much you're worth.

In this business, you do really make a lot of new friends daily.

Well, not necessarily. A good agency in an insurance company usually have around 3 morning meeting (usually ends at 11am), one weekly training class and normally 1 Business Opportunity Presentation event a month. Any other time is for you to manage your work and personal time yourself.

Hi, I was an agent for 5 years before an insurance company hire me as a consultant for their Takaful agencies.

Your no 1 priority right now I believe is to find an agency that you are comfortable to work with. You can survey them from your nearby insurance branch. Just ask questions like what is the best agencies there, who is the leader and so on so forth.

Why? Because a good agency will already have a system where they will help you through out the licensing process and they will have set up a training routine to suit your conditions and lifestyle.

Yes, in KL we have a computerised examination where you will get your exams results immediately thus saving some time.

But there is examination centres all across the nation and Penang is included.

Yes they do. In fact I believe most insurance companies provide both full time and part time agent positions(I'm assuming that you are talking about agent and not office staff).

To register for the exam, go to the Malaysian Insurance Institute (Jalan Duta or Sime Darby Building if in KL). Go in person. Remember to bring a photocopy of your SPM cert! Bring your IC. Bring RM80. The ebook can be downloaded from mii's website at www.insurance.com.my. It's a zip/pdf file. The password is printed on the paper they give you after you register. If you want a peek, pm me for the password. smile.gif If you want, you can buy the same physical book. IIRC it is RM30.

The book is 400 pages! 30 chapters, 10 chapters each for parts A, B, and C. There are 10-12 questions at the end of each chapter for you to test with. It IS easy. I procrastinated until the last minute and only started reading the book and trying out the test on the final day before my exam. And there was still enough time to finish the 20 chapters relevant to me. smile.gif It's possible to go through the book at about 10-30 minutes per chapter without rushing (except for the 2 gigantic chapters, most were quite short).

Now, for my question. After I pass the test, they tell me to wait 30 days before I can collect my cert. Now what? How do I get myself attached to an insurance company? Do I have to wait for the cert to come out first? Anyone has any idea of which company I should approach? (Motor and general non-life).

There are many training programs and courses specifically designed to train people on how to become an insurance agent.

They teach about various policies, their pricing and benefits. However it is also vital to learn about how to use insurance apps as it simplifies so many daily work activities.

Install MintPro in your Smartphone and become more productive in the work place, which will increase your earnings manifold.

Maybe you are the one who did not research enough. Please differentiate between GENERAL & LIFE insurance. General insurance does not have downline. All agent need to register their own agency directly with insurance company and all the commission will be fully earned by the agent and will not undercut by anyone as there is no down/upline agent.

Hi, I've not been on this forum in years but I'm back because I was googling a review for a local business and a LYF post showed up in the search results. It feels good to be back! So I'm not sure if this is still relevant to you after 13 years, haha! But Buss agency has a referral programme that allows any Malaysian to earn like an insurance agent without having to be a licensed agent. I mentioned it on my Quora blog: What is BZ Force?
