Yes it can be done also but of course it would be better to get a dedicated NAS. Also, make sure you use a green HDD, do not put performance HDD or it can get very hot inside the player.

Yea because I have received some feedbacks from my customers that when they insert a higher performance HDD (not a green HDD), it tends to get very hot and almost can't touch the player. So they tried using a green HDD instead and it was much better. Otherwise if you're still worried about the heat, you can always use a notebook cooler, connect to the USB port for power and place the player on top of it.

Yea apparently WD Caviar Green with the new format have a lot of issues with majority of NAS. I think my customer tried another green HDD, he was very happy with it.

Not much experience with Hitachi HDDs but Samsung F3 line is pretty good (I myself is slowly converting all my HDDs to Samsung F3), price for performance definitely almost unbeatable at its class. Won't the Caviar Black generate too much heat? But if attaching to a NAS enclosure then should be alright since the NAS box will be bigger to have slightly more room for ventilation also helped by the cooling fan. The A.C.Ryan player in my opinion quite small so ventilation won't be so good inside the player if fit in a high performance HDD, to me I think I would recommend something like the Samsung F3, runs quite cool and also offers decent performance.

Before the firmware update, the same exact file was viewing in full-screen? So your TV is confirming that the display is 1080p 16:9 right? It looks like a TV zoom feature that caused it (on my Sony TV, the options for the zoom are something like Zoom, Wide Zoom etc.).

You mentioned that you flashed to V7.4.3 r2115 but from the website, the latest is v7.3.3.r4824, maybe try using the latest one instead.

Seems like that is a beta firmware and it is not stated as an official release yet so there might be some bugs or instabilities which can be quite common in beta firmwares.

As for flashing back to an older firmware, I found some steps online which might help:

Disclaimer: Do this at your own risk as this is so far an unofficial method of flashing. So far I think there isn't any official support to flash back to an older firmware.

My Playon!HD Mini 2 is also flashed to the latest firmware (v9.5.5.r2988) and so far no issues. Are you on the same firmware version as well?

That's weird because so far I am not experiencing any issues with this firmware version, I'm starting to wonder if it's any issue with TV incompatibilities or something similar since you are now the second case reported to have that side black bars.

Lag issues when streaming are usually caused by a network limitation. Although your wireless is rated 300mbps, it does not mean it will achieve the full speed plus wireless connectivity somehow can be unstable at times when there are interferences and so on. Also, your media file is also another factor, some HD files have a higher bit rate for video/audio thus demanding more out of your network, usually these files will require a gigabit connection to stream smoothly.

First you need to determine if it's a network problem or not, can you try connecting a thumbdrive or external hard disk to the USB port and play from there. If it still lags, you might want to consult the dealer/retailer you bought from and see if a warranty claim is needed or not.

So what you're saying is it transfer a while then stops completely?

Updated to the latest firmware on my Playon!HD Mini 2, what I can say is so far so good without any issues. Only thing I noticed is that there is some slight delay for it to turn off upon pressing the power button on the remote, when I press it, seems to have a slight delay of few seconds before it turns off.

Previously it turned off almost instantly upon pressing the power button but nothing serious here.

Where are you streaming your files from? A media server or NAS drive?
