I think its a peculiar Realtek chip bug with the wifi dongle. I use another compatible one that can be used on the ACRyan or PC, and it'll randomly disconnect/reconnect for no logical reason I can think of. I sometimes use it for wifi at the PC. Doesn't happen with other brands of dongle or wifi thingys. Lots of Realtek chips are not refined nor perfect, and ACRyan isn't a perfect thing either. They're NOT intel or AMD or Motorola...just a passing thought! hmm.gif

Hi all expert here.
I am thinking of buying a new media player.
After i suft the net, i found out that AC Ryan is one of the most popular player but in the same time it is the most expensive.
Can i know what are the reason you all choose AC Ryan and not choose those cheaper player?
Beside, if i wish to buy the AC Ryan, which player you will recommend?
I am totally new to media player and a bit confuse after read at net...
Can please help me by giving some useful advise?
Thank you very much.

acryan does not offer that many advantages over the cheaper ones except:
- plays all common formats; a few others don't
- has regular firmware upgrades that you dwnld and diy; others may be same or slower or nothing - this is impt to keep playing latest formats
- good reliability , at least in my experience, never ran into problems with both units
- pohd has digital rca audio output - necessary for older avr/amps w/o hdmi input

if you're a light user, might feel it's not worth it. for mid-heavy users like me, i dun want a cheap unit that breaks down or keep getting bugged.
of course, there are costlier ones that are superior, i'm sure. since media players are still evolving, paying too much is not a great idea as well, imo.

I have an ACRyan Play on HD player.

Just want to check whether will the USB detect Western Digital's 2TB external HDD (3.5 inch ones).

Thanks.

yes .... do look at others. i have the hd and mini with the hd running gui2.0. it was a big disappointment, after waiting for so long the new fw is super laggy even with scanning and clear history turn on. i'm switching back to the older fw.

if you have an old pc laying around you can try the htpc route. even getting a new pc for htpc is not that expensive (hardware wise) with the new amd fusion. pc is much more flexible and the xbmc is such an eye candy. wifi, streaming etc would be easier to configure and resolve if you are pc savvy.

if going the media player route, the acryan is pretty ok per above but be wary of the poor fw updates. not sure about the newer hd2 but the gui2.0 on the older players are kinda disappointing.

Impartially speaking, I say the latest F/W update its actually OK..unless your high expectation is like "responsive at lightning speed". Its useable and not all that disappointing is all I can say. The 1st new SDK firmware was a huge disappointment as many found out. They improved it later.
I think people complained everyday at their forum because they think they should have got much better performance (with f/w) considering the retail value for the player and investment in a brand player thats supported by a western world company.
Yes, I tend to agree that I should have got more value and exceptional performance for the money invested in Malaysian Ringgit (could be someone's half to one month's salary).
For the above reasons and all that have happened its ended up a product that doesn't live to high expectations. I could wish this player have a socketed CPU for future upgrade or swap, but I think no-one is interested in manufacturing players like PC architecture, just doesn't happen. Multimedia cpu is also speed and performance limited, therefore firmware improvements for features will also be limited. Just have to buy new model when the time comes. Thats how things work.

Try updating the firmware for your AC Ryan player.

Download it, copy it to your thumbdrive and then just let the player update it.
