Hi all,
.
I'm currently using the Phillips Home Theatre System 5.1 (4 towers, 1 Front Speaker and 1 Subwoofer). Entry level only.... however it's a wired system.
.
The issue is the 2 tower rear speakers cable is not long enough and the cable is actually hard wired or standard two thin wires from the player to the speakers.
.
Question is icon_question.gif , is there a way that I can extend the wires to pull it to the back of my room? NOw all 4 speakers are in front therefore cannot really enjoy surround sound....
.
Is there a way that I can do a wire extension by
a) by a piece of audio wire (if possible) and extend the current wires?
b) DIY and change the whole cable to a new longer wire...
c) If yes, what wires can I use?
.
If not done properly I would understand it may cause loss audio but have this been done before and if yes, can it be done correctly? I just need to extend it by several metres only.
.
Please help....Thanks

i think wat TS means by hard wired is the speaker wire is fixed to the speaker... cannot take it out... or also he can mean dat the speaker wire is attached to the connector to be connected to the speaker... the speaker wire cannot separate from the connector...

btw... wat model u using? i'm using Philip HTS-3373... i also want to know if its possible to change the speaker wire...

You can extend the wire by simply buying a wire of similiar gauge, solder the wire together and insulating it using electrical tape.

cut about 6" from the speaker / termination, strip off the insulation for about 2" for easier joining, on both sides, just connect the new wires according to the same polarity ( Red / White or Positive / Negative), after you've spun both of them together, use the insulation tape (Commonly known as Wire Tape), tape the exposed copper wires and make sure not to short both cables together, plug in to your HTiB, re-position your speakers and enjoy your surround wink.gif

Faidzal – Thanks for the clarification. Yeap hardwired meaning the wire from the speaker is fixed to the speaker, and the other end is fixed to a color coded connector to be connected to DVD player. Btw I’m using similar model to urs but my DVD player is silver in color. Maybe urs is the latest model….Bought mine 2 years back….
.
Okay folks, so it’s possible to just splice i.e. cut the wire and re-attached the wire to a new wire by method of soldering and taping it with a wire tape. I don’t have a soldering machine therefore if I do it via wire twisting them together would this work? Else kena la cari solder as I believe this is the best alternative. Or second alternative by those plastic casing with screws (hope you can imagine this, masa zaman form 5 kemahiran hidup selalu main with this) that you can attached two wires together without soldering….Any comments and doable?
.
Secondly on the extension wires, know any shop that sells equivalent wires? Definitely I can’t use any wires right??? Know where I can get one? Also like Faidzal’s question (thanks bro) if it’s possible then I change to a high quality wires i.e. monster etc would there be any big difference? FYI, I’m using monster cable from my aux out tv to aux in theater but call me a numbnuts I can’t really hear the diff. hahah dh pekak kot….
.

Its either you solder it, tie it together, or crimp it or screw it (like you mention).

There are many ways to connecting a wire together...all work..as long as its 'connected' properly is good enough.
The best is of course soldering it. But I imagine your Philips HT (I was using one myself), those speakers are just noise makers..so by simply cutting it and twist/tie it together should be adequate.

But life is not simple, we also want ways of disconnecting the speaker wires after that without the need to cut wires everytime...so head down to our local electrical shop to see what they have.

Monster Cable etc is sure good...but for your system I dun think there will be any hearable difference.
You can just grab some Philips cables to do your extension.

Thanks for the referral as well notworthy.gif on the phillips wire...will use this one....Cool...........but at the same time, is there an issue with regards of the extension of the wire i.e. the longer it is more power is required to transfer the signal? Will it ensure lossless sound??? Sorry newbie......
.
Regards

DD 5.1 through it really impress me...
even though it's just releasing the "noise" like azbro said.... tongue.gif notworthy.gif

and i'm personally wanna upgrade to AVR, but i realize who i am.....

AVR tk mampu laaa....huhuhuhuhuh either I'm stone deaf kot....kkakakakak but get what u mean bro....will need to save

Added on July 22, 2010, 9:26 amOk folks,
.
I've bought the wire already and this weekend will start the project...been pending for a long time...
.
However to my shock shocking.gif shocking.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif I've just compared the wire I've bought (phillips) and the one at home. The wire at home is much thinner and fragile however the one I've bought is a bit thicker and also looks more highclass.
.
Question is, would there be any effect if I connect both wires? Any signal loss or the whole thing 'koyak'??? From the website the picture of the wire's is thin, biler dapat, alamak gemuk sikit...
.
So how? Still can proceed with the splicing of wires and connceting it together????

Added on July 22, 2010, 10:42 amErmm How do I put this forward to today.......hope bro's can comment and help out....Thanks
