Can do both, not sure about modded consoles, don't have any.

juz update my modded console.... n works perfectly fine.... all u have to do is unplug ur memory unit or format it(if u're having a built in MU) n make sure there is no pirated dvd in ur dvd drive...

While your point no.2 should work, your machine is not saved from banhammer just by removing all memory media as the mod is right into the hearth of the console's drive and Microsoft detects that vital sign of the drive to issue a ban flag!

log in only to update.. then refrain from signing into Live to prevent ur console from being banned. Btw,.. u can transfer saves to USB and modify them. Do a search on google or something.. don't ask me cos I dunno how.

You can visit microsoft knowledgebase for the System Software Update, but not game update

You can download the dash update from the xbox website if you just want to get the usb support feature.
