'Beating [the] aeroplane' would be it, in Cantonese.

It's only unhealthy due to the possibility of mental addiction to the act (action brings about gratification, result: repeat the action), and social stigma. Much like how physical contact between romantic partners may be frowned upon in some places and not others.

If someone can provide a link to a causal (and not a correlative) research on masturbation and any physical side effects, I'd gladly read it. Otherwise, please stop scaring the poor fellow.

Weird to mention how to say the full TFK word or the meaning? But Nevins said 'Beating [the] aeroplane'.. that doesn't sound weird, even if the actual meaning is (and why that is related to masturbation o.O) But nah, it's okay.. if it's weird to be mentioned here then it's ok, was just curious that's all smile.gif

But TFK is a normal thing..

Well if you really must have it spelled out: Ta Fei Kei.

I'm not very good with hanyupinyin and/or the Cantonese variant so I didn't want to make a mistake. Why would it be related to masturbation...? That I do not know, being the culturally-isolated Chinese that I am.

And you're right, masturbation is but a normal part of physical development. I daresay almost everyone here has experienced it in one form or another at some point in time. It may not necessary involve direct hand contact, but let's not go into that sort of discussion just yet.

Well thank you Nevins lol Just wanted to know the full word, that's all.. Is the full word a taboo word for Chinese? Because you guys seem reluctant to say the full word.

But what I can see, masturbation is more frowned upon by very religious people and older generations.. for younger generation nowadays like us, it seems like a very normal thing and can even discuss with friends like it's an everyday thing. I haven't heard of anyone who does it reporting of having any unhealthy effect unless you use other than 'traditional' methods which I don't want to mention. It just can affect your ways of thinking.. some people can become too addicted and too perverted, which is so not good..

Just as long as one doesn't become like Jim in the movie American Pie, then it should be ok, haha. But if TS wants to stop once and for all, then I don't think there's any effect on the body.. just your mind because you've been doing it for years, and now you want to stop.. but yeah, gradually reducing it is good..

It's not taboo, it's just that some may be somewhat embarrassed to talk about it. I use proper terminology anyway so it's not an issue for me.

You're right, it's frowned upon by some social circles, religious groups not the least, simply because of the stigma attached to it. Life and times may change, but mindsets rarely do. And even then, not altogether willingly.

End of the day, as long as no one is mentally hooked to it, then it's perfectly normal; not something you'd want to announce to the world, but a normal phase in sexual development nonetheless. Perhaps when the powers-that-be introduce proper sexual education in schools, the general public will be better informed about this, as opposed to having to sift through potentially misleading, conflicting, or plain 'makes-no-sense' information.
