have a question for external hard disk.
I have heard of many who spoke that the hard disks by Hitachi and Toshiba are of good quality. So, im finding myself an external hard disk by these manufacturers. I know some ext hdd manufacturers are not making the ext hdd themselves (Buffalo is using hdd by Samsung)
But now i have encountered difficulty in selecting the ext hdd as recently Hitachi is acquired by WD and Samsung hdd division is taken over by Seagate. So any suggestions on a 2.5" 1~2TB ext hdd with UB3.0? Priority goes to reliability and durability as im using for long-term storage.

for all peoples who out of space, i suggest u buy DVD-R instead n burn ur stuff while waiting for hardisk's price back to normal.. later u can transfer back ur data from dvd..  it is not worth it to buy 500gb hardisk at rm3++
*
I dont think this is very practical... because most people who ran out of space are mainly due to expanding collection of picture albums, songs, and movies. DVD+-R maximum capacity would be 4.7GB for single layer and around 9GB for double layer... this may be useful till certain extent, however if one have a large collection of >100GB or individual file with sizes > 4.7GB, it would be practically irrelevant... plus, the time needed to burn the discs.... one by one.... doh.gif

However, i do agree that this may be a viable option for now.... just that it may not suit everyone.... nod.gif

yes it is not practical...but it is better than waste money buying harddisk at insane price right now, plus it is hard to find individual file that more than 4.7gb unless u only download ISO and blu-ray movie.. actually the time to burn 4.7gb should'n take more than 5 minute.. u can burn ur stuff while facebooking of trolling in /k/  brows.gif
*
Yeah, as a temporary solution it is still okay... nod.gif

500gb buffalo pctu3 buffalo only increase to RM20 since sept2011, but toshiba 1tb u-3 from RM289 raise up to RM350 in lyp.  sweat.gif  anyway, lucky 2.5inch didnt increase like wat happened on 3.5inch hdd lor.  laugh.gif
*
Yeah, i was stunned when i looked at the price of the 3.5" hdd at digitalmall...
So i grabbed the 2.5" 1tb fast, coz i scared the same thing would eventually hit the 2.5" sector.... cry.gif

Haha... well, frankly speaking, me also filling up my ext HDD quite fast, second 500GB already running low at around 100GB... so have to buy new one, no choice as i cannot hold on till march 2012.....
Btw... i only download animes.... laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

External portable 2.5 prices are still reasonable up to 640gb where prices are still under 300 bucks. Just got a 500gb for less than 200, got some membership card benefits. tongue.gif

External 3.5 prices could get ssd already at these times. Really 'cut throat'. sad.gif
*
Yeah, that's why i faster faster go grab 1TB ext HDD 2.5" before they sellers realized that "Eh? We should also increase the price for 2.5" as well since everyone is hunting 2.5" now..." sweat.gif

This is just a matter of time. Don't hope for 6 months than the HDD will decrease. It will a year and maybe more. If you dont have time, pls do spent some time to do housekeeping on your HDD. Backup only important thing. Anime and Movies which you already watch you can delete it as you are not going to watch it again or backup up in DVD. Don't waste your money!!!!!!
*
Well, you just dont understand how people like me feels.... because your answer is the same as my mother..... shakehead.gif
At first my friend also said that to me... until he found himself also have something that he just cant delete even though he already watched/read it... then he understands me.... laugh.gif

Yes, it has to do with the flood. The main problem with the flooding is not just Hard Disk assembly (We still got Seagate to assembly hard disks). The problem is a lot of the supplier manufacturing the hdd components also kena. What to assemble when you got no parts?

I checked the latest pricelist at a few shops...seems like the price has stabilize a bit for now, and in fact, seagate hdd price are decreasing slightly.
*
Yeah... if not mistaken, Buffalo ext HDD is using Samsung disks.....

Btw... i think another reason other brands also expensive is due to the anti-monopoly policy..... hmm.gif

but better off go for buffalo as my fren who working in lowyatplaza rma center saying that 2.5inch usb wd and seagate failure rate is quite high.
*
Hmm... then i think he can also go for Toshiba or Samsung... since the internals of a buffalo is mostly Samsung.... since buffalo never manufacture their own HDD.....

Me got a Toshiba 1TB 2.5" 2 weeks ago too... at digitalmall.... at ALLIT

True, i will never go for Seagate again because my Seagate freeagent suddenly died without any reason and all my data gone. It is just 2 years of using it and seldom use.I know its "NASIB". All things are not perfect. For warranty no point ,because the important thing is the data and very costly to recover it. I'm very sad because some of my work, personal stuff and research inside there. I cannot sleep the whole week because of losing very important data.

I feel you man, now currently im having 3 ext hdd, all 2.5".... first being a 500GB buffalo ministation (the one with the turbousb one), then 2nd being the 500GB western digital my passport essential USB3.0 (almost used up, now at around critical 100GB...) and now, the lastest one, Toshiba 1TB USB3.0 (not yet opened)....
im still a uni student, and although i dont have any of my homework related stuffs in my externals, but they do hold alot of my personal stuffs.... and i really cant imagine what would happened to me if one of them died... *touch wood touch wood*.... think i would go zombie for like at least a month and not being interested in anything.....................

Factories back in full production does not mean prices will drop instantly.
You need to factor in..
1. Shipping time (6-8 weeks to ship from continent to continent).
2. Custom release time
3. Internal shipping to local distributors.
4. Time taken by dealers to reduce the price, which they will gradually decrease over a period of time.

by the time all these happen, it will be around mid-2012.

WD kena hit left and right big time this time, kena whack by flood, being sue by seagate by something they might not have committed, and forced by EU to sell off 1 of their factory because of monopoly of HDD market.  sweat.gif
*
Walao.... WD so unfortunate this time? Being struck by "waves" of obstacles...... (puns intended)

But seriously, the sellers are trying to rake in high and ride the flood wave to cut us consumer's throat....
I still remember before this flood, ALLIT in digitalmall had to held a promotion to sell off their inventory of HDDs at the entrance.... but now.... they dont scare you dont buy, they scare you cant afford to buy..... doh.gif doh.gif

QUOTE(SnoWFisH @ Nov 28 2011, 05:32 PM)
largest is 1.5TB for 2.5" right now, due to the limitations of how many platters you can fit in vertically...
*
Yea... so far only saw 1.5TB for 2.5" on pricelists now... but the price is like >RM500-600.... pretty pain.... so i still choose 1TB.... wait till 2TB comes....

i have 2 desktop computers, let's just label them A and B.
I downloaded videos on comp A and i can watch it with no problem, but when i copy it using USB thumbdrive and put in my comp B, the video somehow got some problem with its color something like corrupted or what.... is it that indication that my comp A's hdd is nearing its end?

You can test the file integrity with a DOS command line tool like 'md5sum' or 'sha1sum'.

The md5sum tool in particular will generate a 32 character hash of any given file(s). So you can run the tool on the file in both computers and then compare the resulting hashes. If the hashes match, then the files are identical and your colour problem is likely the result of some other problem.

Here are some md5sum download links:

http://fossies.org/windows/misc/md5sum-w32.zip/ <- I like this one best
http://etree.org/md5com.html <- An alternate option
http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/md5sums/ <- Has a 'pretty' output. I don't like it, but you might.

Thanks for your kind suggestion, will try it. notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
