5 things we don’t like about the new Windows Live Messenger Beta

1. Why am I not able to change my display name?
When I go to Options > Personal, I can see an option to edit my name and I have done it but still I can’t see changes on my Messenger.

2. Where are my good old emoticons?
Though the complete GUI and UI of Wave 4 is really attractive and eye catching but we still feel that the old emoticons are much better than the new one’s!

3. Badges:
OK, that’s something cool, but atleast give us some flexibility to add our own badges.

4. Why not Twitter?
I was hoping that may be this time I was able to Tweet from Messenger. I hope I will not have to wait till Wave 5!

5. “In Windows Live Messenger you can draw or hand-write your messages”
That’s History now. Why on earth was this cool feature removed? I fail to understand this. It really saves time when you need to show some rough design while chatting with your friend. I was not able to find if it is there in thies version! If you know, please let me know.

QUOTE
Today we’re releasing an update to Windows Live Essentials 2011 beta. One of the main reasons we release betas is to allow early adopters to enjoy our products and provide feedback on their experience. First, we want to say thank you for your help. For Messenger alone, we had over 3 million unique users, 3.5 million updates to display pictures, 6.2 million video calls, and 7.6 million updates to status messages.

Your beta feedback and usage has helped shape the many improvements we’ve made and continue to make across Messenger, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Mail, and Family Safety. Today I’d like to summarize some of the more visible changes you’ll see in today’s update, and we’ll follow up with more details in later posts.

Performance and quality of service improvements

We’re always working to improve the performance and quality of our services and we’ve made significant progress in this area in today’s beta update. This includes things like decreasing the time it takes to start each program or render each webpage, and improving the quality of your experiences. It often takes hundreds of small improvements and optimizations to better the final experience. Here are some of the many improvements you’ll see in this area:
A quicker Messenger – The time it takes to sign in, and to refresh contacts and social feeds, as well as animation speed, are all faster than in previous versions of Messenger.
More efficient video chat - Messenger video chat uses 30% fewer CPU resources by offloading work to the GPU.
Better facial recognition - Photo Gallery facial recognition is improved significantly and works more quickly.
Larger movie uploads - Movie Maker will upload higher resolution movies to SkyDrive (480x640 vs. the previous 320x480).
Higher bit-rate movies - Movie Maker now supports higher quality (bit-rate) content.
Better spell-checking - Writer has significantly improved the quality of its spell-checking.
Better integration with Office - Writer is much better at retaining all formatting when you copy and paste from Word and other Microsoft Office programs.
Better handling of Gmail – Mail now automatically handles Gmail’s spam and trash folders properly.
Faster web filtering - Family Safety web filtering is 35% faster than in the previous version.

It’s a QFE (Quick Fix Engineering) update, that is to say, this build is for bug fixes and not UI changes.

This release updates all Essentials 2011 apps from Build 15.4.3502.0922 to Build 15.4.3508.1109 except Windows Live Mesh and Windows Live Family Safety.

Though the web installer and offline installer version shows 15.4.3502.0922 but when you run this, it’ll prompt you for the upgrade to new build.

One of the bug this QFE fixes is in Live Writer. It fixes the AltGr shortcut issue for European Keyboards in Windows Live Writer

QFE1 for Windows Live Essentials 2011 (v15.4.3508.1109) now available through Microsoft Update

QUOTE
If you’re using Windows Live Essentials on Windows Vista or Windows 7 and have Microsoft Update turned on, you’ll see an optional update this week in all 48 languages where Windows Live Essentials 2011 is available.

After launching Windows Live Essentials 2011 last fall, we’ve been closely watching incoming data, monitoring the quality of service, and listening to the issues you were reporting. This update, called QFE1, primarily addresses the top quality-related issues that impact a large number of our customers. (QFE stands for Quick Fix Engineering.)

Specifically:
In Messenger, we fixed a couple of issues where in some cases you could not re-establish video calls or file sharing activities after losing your network connection. Also, sometimes your status messages and display picture were not synchronizing correctly between PCs, so you’d see a notification that changes made would not be seen on other computers. We also made various performance and stability improvements.
In Photo Gallery, we made a design change so that geotagging no longer overwrites GPS coordinates in image files.
We corrected various problems with language translation.

This update to Windows Live Essentials 2011 has been available for download since December 2, 2010. We decided to make this update available through Microsoft Update to bring it to the attention of more of our customers. If you downloaded Windows Live Essentials 2011 prior to December 2nd or bought a PC with Windows Live Essentials 2011 preinstalled, we recommend that you install this update.

This optional update will download a package that only includes the new changes from the originally released version. You won’t have to go through the entire setup for Windows Live Essentials. You may, however, need to reboot your computer after installation is complete. If you start a new installation, or upgrade to Windows Live Essentials 2011 today, your installation will include QFE1.

You can check to see if you have QFE1 installed by looking at the version number in the About dialog for Messenger or Windows Live Photo Gallery. If your version number is 15.4.3508.1109, you’re running the latest and greatest released build. If you’re running version 15.4.3502.0922, we highly recommend that you install this update.

Thank you for using Windows Live and letting us know what you think of it. Your feedback helps to improve our products and make them better.

Vice President, Windows Live Test and Systems Engineering

This week, we will release an update to Windows Live Essentials 2011. In addition to changes that improve performance and quality of service, the update also includes full support for SSL in Windows Live Mail, and the latest Bing bar. Here are a few of things we think you’ll find the most interesting:

Mail: We fixed a sorting issue in the Sent items folder and improved the upload reliability and instrumentation in Photo mail.
Messenger: We fixed a couple of stability issues and made various changes for improved voice and video quality. We fixed an issue that was causing sound to be lost after upgrading, and we improved performance when displaying the MSN Today page in the main window.
Photo Gallery: We implemented various bug fixes for crashes related to launching Photo Gallery through Autoplay and facial recognition.
And more: We made many other usability, performance, and stability improvements across the suite of Windows Live Essentials apps.

We will be rolling this update out in 2 phases. Starting this week, it will be available at http://explore.live.com and on Microsoft Download Center. Later this month, existing Windows Live Essentials 2011 customers will be prompted to update to this version. At that time, it will be offered as an optional update. You can see if you already have the latest and greatest by checking the build version number in Help About, which for this update is 15.4.3538.0513.

On behalf of the entire team, thank you for using Windows Live and for all your feedback that helps us continue to improve our products.
