No Gamersgate games generally have no restrictions such as that. It's Paradox's(The guys that did Hearts of Iron/ Europa Universalis) digital distribution service. They are Swedish and they also publish other games.

It's not GG's fault. MoW has so many third party companies dealing with it. Aspyr, DMS, Best way, 505 games, 1C and many different versions. Different companies do patches for different version. It took nearly half a year(or maybe more) for them to update the steam version. WHose fault? I dont know...DMS claims its miscommunication. As for GG pressuring them, lets just say that the Steam version is probably the one with the most user base for MoW since Steam had this game on sale very very early. User base grown quite big. And even with that you get miscommunication.

From my experience, if you want to buy multiplayer games, its better to buy from the ones your friends bought from. To avoid slow patching process etc. Even if the game uses gamespy or whatever often times patches are not rolled out at the same time across the board.
