ahpingko : i use small aperture F/11 and external flash , get to shoot 3 times than the fly ran away pening2
i dun think compability is the problem. u kena try on other bodies , cari kawan wiv alphas.. but try check first if you look thru viewfinder at near 280mm and 300mm and compare with shot taken at both. get the same wideness/angle/sama view or not...

My old 75-300 has the same problem too. I sent back to Sony and they fixed it for me since it's under warranty.
