QUOTE(albnok @ Jun 23 2010, 10:17 PM) zstan: Same result what. I just worded it differently. ohhh..the iso used need to divide by iso 100 is it? ok that's where i got it wrong.Reach = Guide Number * square root of (current ISO/ISO 100) / F number So reach = 58 meters * square root of (ISO400/ISO100) / F4 = 58 meters * square root of 4 / F4 = 58 meters * 2 / 4 = 29 meters Nice ones on #2 and #3! thanks! |

to all sifus here..
is it true that 3rd party lenses are reversed engineered from the original bodies of a camera? if that's the case, would a 3rd party lens i buy now become obsolete if i buy a new alpha 5 years later? |

QUOTE(8tvt @ Jun 24 2010, 10:09 AM) i think alot of lenses still not in alpha line up.. oh..because i heard from my uncle that there were issues with 3rd party lenses not compatible with the latest software of the latest cameras and hence they became obsolete.. and again if they make one.. got a slight enhancement.. but still can be used right.. why worry much.. Added on June 24, 2010, 10:17 am QUOTE(ariff_koboi @ Jun 24 2010, 10:13 AM) i suggest u buy a 2nd hand lens ba...maybe after i got my tammy can sell mine to u.. its not worth the repair cost... oh... i see..so how do these 3rd party lens get the 'technology' to build the respective mounts for the respective brands?
still reverse engineered right? not worried about sony/minolta lens la..more concerned about 3rd parties: tamron/sigma/tokina etc... Added on June 24, 2010, 10:48 am QUOTE(boyzone @ Jun 24 2010, 10:38 AM) Yes, is an external flash. my flash gun also a bit wobbly..probably due to wrong handling of it..but still can fire flashes when u press the shutter right?can feel loosen after slot in the external flash. QUOTE(shootkk @ Jun 24 2010, 10:50 AM) zstan : I don't think it's reverse engineered lar... I would think that the mount information is easily available from the manufacturers like Sony or Canon or Nikon. It does not stand to logic that they will stop third party lens maker from making lenses for their mounts. yea i know its available...but somehow or what they still need to pay a fee/acquire a licence to obtain the mount information right?dun think canon/sony would just give their mounts information to 3rd parties for freet?so if they don't give out the information, the mounts are most likely to be reverse engineered? why no logic?3rd party lenses are eating a share into their profit margin lea..wouldn't these companies be a lot happier if 3rd party lenses don't exist? then everybody have no choice but the buy from the respective brands.. oh maybe i am too skeptical? @8tvt i think u misunderstood what i am saying. nvm la. hehe. |

@albert
thanks for the explanation! just a bit tad worried that 3rd party lens cannot be used with newer bodies if Sony decides to upgrade the firmware. @wonka get NEX-5 la! is that compact enough? the IQ of my kodak(RM400) compact is terrible as well even in broad day light. if u really need to switch to compact, i'd suggest you for high end compacts, eg.canon G12..gf1 etc.... but its really unnecessary to sell ur gears la...who knows u might need one day again? QUOTE(ieR @ Jun 24 2010, 12:54 PM) either u missunderstood, or ur uncle outside misgear or misguide by 'seller/promoter' i dun think he misunderstood la..he's been using an SLR right after form 6 and till now..about 25-30 years of experience?although he's a die hard canon user la. it happened about 24-27 years ago, where, when the first AF firstly introduced. canon has to re-engineer the whole mount causing old lenses are unable to be used on the new body with AF, nikon stays with the same mount with minor modification, hence, during that era, canon loses a lot 'fan' and all jump to nikon. to make story short or being pass through 50 people, it becomes, "old lens cant use on new camera" =.=, partly, all u need is "adapter, or, perhaps u only can MF" thats all. BUT its RARE to find a >25 year old lens, mostly will get fungus because that era, drybox arent popular. (maybe i was wrong and misunderstood ur statement) and, today people ARE SMART, they wont build something to destroy old market(or maybe they will, like intel socket, LOL)... future camera are "backward compatible" meaning it WILL support older chips" (like how we have 8 pins on the alphas, but still able to use 15 year old KM50mm with 5 pins) *btw, sony have a minor share of Tamron, and tamron have given/share exclusive lens design to sony btw, i think the word u are looking for is backward compatibility, not reverse engineered. LOL, coz they sound 'back-wards' LOL. lens backward engineered mean, they make lens only make mount/body. or it could mean, they try redesign similiar design of VR/IS or HSM/SSM from the existing design, which has no issue wor. also, there is a STANDARD they follow on the each Mount. so, wont differ a lot. and i think u misunderstood my statement..i was worrying about the change in firmware which won't accept older lenses(3rd party) as time passes..but thanks for explaining to AF and tamron shares thingy.. anyway i am just being too skeptical la... Added on June 24, 2010, 1:13 pm QUOTE(Wonka @ Jun 24 2010, 01:10 PM) It will all depend on whether I can save up money or not end of this month. If I cant meaning that I will have to send it to garage sales. Hehehhe. are u in a rush to shoot something important?Problem with it is I have a rather tight budget on getting a camera and I need to save up for something else. Im still thinking tho but I will make a decisions later this year. if not then just slowly save the money la..put the money into better use first... who knows few months later NEX-4 or something will come out and u can get a cheaper NEX-5/G12?
