Attendees at Microsoft's annual E3 press conference are accustomed to flashy game announcements and big-budget trailers, but the company had a surprise in store at today's Los Angeles event. The Xbox 360 is getting a slimmer, angular new look, and an internal redesign that'll reduce noise and add much-wanted new features -- and it'll be in stores as soon as this week.

Packing a black-finished case with prominent cooling vents, the new machine -- nicknamed the Xbox "Slim" by fans -- will retail for $299, the same price as the current 120 GB Xbox 360 Elite system. It will be compatible with all Xbox 360 games and hardware, with the exception of old-style external hard drives and memory cards.

It's not any more powerful, but the redesigned 360 nevertheless addresses a number of recurring gripes with the existing design: aside from being smaller, it's quieter, includes built-in super-fast 802.11n wireless networking, and packs an internal, replaceable 250 GB hard drive.

It's also equipped with a smaller power supply, a dedicated connector for Microsoft's upcoming Kinect motion control system, and five USB ports. A matching black wireless controller will ship with the system.

Conflicting reports exist on whether the older models will remain on sale, but according to at least one specialist blog, the normally reliable Joystiq, Microsoft is indeed "no longer manufacturing the original Xbox 360 hardware in any form."

Alternatively, Microsoft is cutting prices of the existing Xbox range to $149 for the basic Arcade model, and $249 for the upgraded Elite. It's unclear whether that's a time-limited clearance offer, or if it'll be permanent -- but if you want to snag a cheap Xbox, and you're not too bothered about getting the brand-new Slim, this could be your chance.

i doubt it can be cracked that easily. they are implementing a new slim drive with a newer firmware. even so M$ already implement a new encryption in games like ff13, making a proper backup copy is impossible.

i'm thinking of buying arcade also..but after see the unboxing of the hdd itself..i think i might get myself a premium one since the hdd replaceable is not like ps3 where we can just slot in the 2.5" hdd.they put the hdd inside a casing.

Microsoft really got the aesthetics correct for the Xbox 360 S. It looks drop dead gorgeous and shiny. The shape of the design still is a bit weird. As if it is offspring of 360 Elite + PS3 Slim

Oh and the "General Hardware Failure" is no longer covered by Xbox 360 S Warranty. Which is like Microsoft saying "There is no more RROD." Jasper was the 'it' version that took care of it while 360 S seems to be the version that gives no headaches.

Just don't tilt the console while a disc is running.

there will be problem with kastam if they found out you bringing one back. somehow they now know anything that have 360 logos is quite an expensive products.. if they found, either settle it by give them duit kopi or pay the taxes. if pay taxes, i'm not sure if they will charge for didn't declare the items.

as i have done some research in the web about trade ins tat i oways see on the web..just for extra info.. for a xbox elite 120gb trade ins.. it does not worth as much as PS3... you will only have to pay 24 pound with ps3 while elite u still have to pay 100pound.. it makes sense.. but its unfair..

im still very unsettle with the 360 regarding the RRoD issue. It seems microsoft only did to solve the issue by removing the red LED and nothing else...cunning.

btw anyone yet got their hands on it?? gonna wait for mine next year most likely.

so guessing the new box is not immune as well to the 'death' failure.

but maybe with much more lower rate of failure...who knows..

of coz, no electronic hardware can survive on overheating issues. since it uses less power chance of getting overheat is lesser than prev hardware revisions.
