I WANT A GUINEA PIG! ((A new owner checklist))

THIS IS IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE CONSIDERING OWNING A GUINEA PIG.
Please take note that you will need to prepare the proper necessities before owning a guinea pig. Also take note that PETS MAKE THE WORST KIND OF GIFT/PRESENT for a loved one, because they will not be furnished with the proper information on how to care for the pets.

Necessities include:

1. Cage (budget: RM 100) - Please get a rather large one. At least 2ft x 1ft if you can't afford any bigger. GPs grow pretty big, about 27 cm in length (for males) if given the right nutrition so they need ample space. Buy those cage with bars on top but without bard at the feet area. Can cause bumblefeet if they keep stepping on the rails. GPs need proper ventilation or they might get heat stroke.

2. Food bowl (budget: RM10) - Please get a ceramic bowl that can't be toupled over by your GP. Consider his head size so he can comfrtably fit his head into the bowl as he grows larger.

3. Water bottle (budget: RM10) - Get those like Living World bottle lar. Don't ever put water in a bowl as ulternative because stuff may get in the water and foul it, and if ur GP drink it it will become unhealthy. Make sure you get a bottle that fits the size of how much your GP drinks daily.
4. Food (budget: RM 20) - Please buy brands with enhanced Vitamin C. Don't buy those with seeds in it because it will poke and hurt your GP's mouth and throat.

5. Hay (budget: RM 25) - Hay is VERY important. It helps with your GP's digestion and keep their ever-growing teeth in their proper size. Babies should be given alfafa hay for the extra calcium content. Seem adults should start eating timothy hay, which suits their requirements more than alfafa, although alfafa hay can still be given as a treat.

6. Bedding (budget: RM 25) - You can use common wood shavings you can find in the store but please stay away from pine or anything scented as it is very bad for your GP.

7. Nail Clipper (budget: RM20) - You can get the clipper for small animals or small dogs. You can use the human nail clipper but using the animal clipper is so much easier. Please read up on how to clip their nails. Clipping into the quick can cause bleeding and discomfort for your GP.

Additional:
1. Chew toy in a form of a hay house or salt stones.
2. Hide house: For them to feel safe. It helps them to feel that they are protected.
3. Comb : GPs shed. So a comb is the proper thing to buy. For long hairs like Sheltie and Peruvian, you must comb daily or it will matt up. For short hairs like American Satin(or the Normal) and Abbysinian, You don't have to comb daily but doing so reduces shedding.
4. Vitamin C - You can get those vitamin C pills like chewies for your GP. GPs are like us in the sense that they do not make their own vitamin C, so they have to get it through their food intake everyday. A good example is LC-Vit Forte.

Other Additional information:
1. Please offer vegetables everyday. You can google for Veges high in Vitamin C.
2. GPs are herbivorous. Please don't offer meat.
3. Having contact daily wth your GP creates trust. Then they will want your company.
4. GPs like living in groups. But there are some exceptions that don't mix well with others
5. If you've decided to buy a friend for your GP, please be sure that they are the same sex. Or your GPs will breed non stop, which is bad for the mummy GP. To prevent inbreeding, please don't buy 2 from the same store (if you insist to breed them, please read up).
6. Please buy from a home breeder if possible. Some petshop GPs are frequently underaged and underaged Gps might develop problems when growing into adults.
7. Please supervise when your GP has flooring time with other pets. Dogs may be vicious to it, etc etc.
8. GPs can be toilet trained! Then all you have to do is empty the toilet daily while most of the bedding remains clean! GPs are quite intelligent so toilet training is quite easy!

Intor custom air ventilation... Maybe use old computer fan, cut open some holes, and put fan to promote some air ventilation...
Otherwise it's matter of time the gp suffocate... rclxub.gif

QUOTE(xavi5567 @ Jun 29 2010, 12:57 PM)
this is a english merino not coronet.. coronet is already in malaysia market price at rm188

psychict:
darn big la ur pig's house.. cleaning easy kah? the 2nd floor's floor is coroplast? ur pig wont chew it off?
*
Cleaning is easy, I put in newspaper, then towel, then bathroom mat juz 2 make sure they dun burrow under the towel... So I sweep once two days, and then change the towels once three days like that oly... Newspaper change once 4 or 6 days depends on how soiled are their pee...

The yellow plastic thing u see on the top level is a pet shop cage plastic bottom which houses a grill and bathroom mat and works as their potty... Where they get their hay n water in the area too... (Going to swap this tray out for a smaller potty for them coz planning to sell the petshop cage to whoever's interested... Not required anymore whistling.gif )

Ground n First also got Chloroplast floor, sides, and back is one whole piece... Even stairs is juz Chloroplast with those car non-slip mats... All cable tied onto the grills n bungalow frame...

The cage I had was too small... Dun see them popcorn at all... Now they popcorn suka hati and run up n run down doing laps... Two males, hav been together since petshop time so so far no problems staying together but then one tend to be much much bigger than the other... the White one is a real fei zai... haha laugh.gif
Brown one... not getting bigger that much but eat no less than fei zai lo... shocking.gif

BTW, the cabinet doesn't come with the wheels at the bottom... Custom bought wheels and spot welded at 4 kaki... haha
Very good to move bungalow around to mop the underneath... and sometimes I push them outside for some sunshine... hehe
When push out... I look like those dim sum parlour waiter selling GP instead... LOL rolleyes.gif

Thanks... Took me a while but I finally managed to get him to shit in the toilet. He would always shit in the pigloo. So I had to move the pigloo over the toilet area. Now he just shits in the toilet area. I had to move his food dish out of the toilet area. Cos it made him confused whether to eat or shit there. But now he's happy and only poops in the correct place.

Lucky u... my two boys... now shit every inch of the bungalow... lol

I just bought a hooded toilet for my newly adopted GP Timi and after putting it inside the cage he immediately went to use it  rclxms.gif
So clever  nod.gif
However..... got a new friend for him last night Mimi, who poo everywhere in the cage.
I guess that is because she is just 2 months plus.
But when I peeped at them this morning.... I did not see much poo inside the cage so I think Mimi also used the toilet.
They are such clever animals  wub.gif

Please dont say Hagen is a better brand. I'll slap anyone who does. sweat.gif

Hagen is the best 'budget' brand. Its cheap. But it smells horrible, and I noticed GPs poo waaay more than usual on that brand. Some says because it contains corn.

Go for Kaytee, or Oxbow. They are indeed better than Hagen.
*
Ou really? I've been giving them Hagen since the second week i have them... b4 that is some cheap street type pallets which are unknown brand and unknown content...
If u're saying that Hagen makes GP poo waaay more usual than Oxbow... I might juz try Oxbow smile.gif hehe
but budget need 2 increase o... I'm getting Hagen 2kg for RM10 @ my local store... also one month gaotim... for two male GPs... whistling.gif

If you want to save cost, but yet want to give your GPs the balance diet, you can mix Hagen pellet with Oxbow pellets.

Solely rely on Hagen brand, your GP won't die, but with better brand like Kaytee or Oxbow, you can see the difference  in terms of fur coat and appearance on your GP.

Btw, if you fed the unknown brand pallets for long, I can bet with you that your GP won't live to its maximum life span of 6-7 years old.  That's why in Malaysia many GP owners say GP only live 3-4 years max in Malaysia due to Malaysia weather, that is bullshit!  My GPs are already 5 years old, and I wish to break this record.  My GPs are house outdoor, weather could be quite hot for them at times, especially those long fur type, but yet our Malaysian weather have not much impact on them.  It is their immunity that count, balance diet contribute to the good immunity too.
*
notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Totally agree on the balanced diet and body immune... I think it's juz that Msians getting lots of wrong information to start with... that's y many assume shorter life span smile.gif
