ok, since the pros haven't Awaken (pun intended) let me see if noob like me can explain 

higher affinity => great chance of getting a critical hit when attacking

awaken => every weapon in the game which starts off with no element actually has a "hidden" element that needs this skill to enable it.

YK very pro wan - manages to be technically strong and visually stunning at the same time

for example, if you look at SnS Weapons, some of them originally have elemental and status attacks activated. Example - Shadow Saber by default has poison attribute, Icicle Spike has ice attribute. so even without the Awaken skill activated, you can deal both raw damage and elemental/status damage by default with these weapons.

some of the weapons have "hidden" skills. you need to "wake them up" with the Awaken skill. for example, Hunter Knife if awakened, deals ice damage, Soldier's Dagger deals poison. if you don't have the Awaken skill, both Hunter Knife and Soldier's Dagger will purely deal raw damage.

hehe. you can either make an armor that gives you awaken skill (lagia+ or alatreon) , or gem it up. some armor combos also give you awaken.

but awaken not that useful wan woh....
