hi alvin! there are actually two portions to MH3, the offline game, and the online game.

the offline game can be finished in single player mode, it will teach you the mechanics of the game and train you up to be a good hunter. however, a whole new world opens up when you step online, as that is where your skills gained during offline play will be tested, and that is where you learn how to play in a team.

there are different monsters online that you can't meet offline. harder monsters means better items, stronger weapons, etc etc.
